Q: Can it operate on the battery?

It only operates on battery. The batteries last quite a while.

Q: Is there a timer function and can you pause it?

If it functioned properly then yes, I believe there was a sleep function. I rarely say this since I think you get what you pay for and this is a relatively inexpensive item to start with but this is pretty low quality. I wouldn't recommend or buy it.* edit: you probably what to know its low quality. The case is typical plastic, the button that slides up and down to set the clock, set alarm, didn't slide all the way to bottom so I couldn't adjust the clock. The LED light unusually bright!

Q: I want something where the time is always lit up if I walk into a dark room. Does this work like that?

You can set the backlight to "never on" or to "light sensor" (where it will only come on when it's dark). It's not very bright when lit but I suppose that makes it easier to sleep. Not a great clock overall.

Q: how long do the batteries last when the backlite is on all the time?

I purchased almost a year ago (June 26, 2013) and am still on the same batteries. I have set the clock to Backlite on. Problem is that the sensor is very sensitive; it works too well to save save battery when "not needed" and can stay off with just a little ambient light from other electronics. Additionally, the viewing angle is a bit limited with this device, similar to an older notebook LCD.
