NO. You could use the TOPPING D90se, D90, EXT90, A90 to work with Topping Pre90, they are the perfect combination partner.

Q: Would this be good for MC cartridges?

The short answer is NO! It does not come equipped with a phono stage unless you add a external one to work with your particular cartridge. Hope this addresses your concern.

Q: Is there a reason to not just use the A90 as your pre amp? Since they are the same price and I get a head amp plus a pre amp?

Yes you could use the A90 for both a preamp and headphone amp. I think the only thing that may be limiting, depending on your needs, is the low number of inputs and no DAC.

Q: Does the remote control the actual volume?

To address your concern the Pre 90 provides a full function remote, display brightness, input selection, mute, and volume can all be controlled from the remote. It is a excellent preamp for the money!
