I purchased this flash head to experiment with a different approach for macro-photography. Indeed, I use a big, "normal" flash head, very powerful and suitable for 1:1 macro. But the huge reflector and the bulkiness and weight of the whole setting is not adapted for my other macro lens able of 2:1 magnification. This small, compact flash answers a lot of the constrains I was looking to solve, especially the detachable head, which can now be located wherever I wish (with a flexible support, for example), and specifically just above the lens to light the subject from a very short distance. Still experimenting on how to "soften" the light coming from the flash head so close, but at this magnification ratio, the small emitting surface is already big enough for the subject to avoid too much of a "hot spot" on it ... This flash is not the most powerful on the market, far from it, but for this specific use, I have to use the minimum power output, 1/64 power output which can be set right from 2 small buttons on the transmitter ! At that power output, the recycle time is around 1/2 to 1 second, depending on the freshness of the batteries, 2 AA only. I can do with it, but this might be a no-go for macro shooters doing stack-up. No TTL, output setting have to be set by yourself, which is ok in my case, as I do not want to rely on the camera to set the exposure (too much variation of subject and background in macro photography) and as this prevents the "pre-flash" used for TTL. This being said, this little flash is quite a favourite for street photographers, allowing flash fill-in, but again, do not hope to light a whole room with it, even if the reflector can be tilted "up" to 90° on the ceiling ... Nevertheless, the possibility to detach the "head" from the "emitter" which stays on the camera, is a real bonus, one could hold it by hand or locate it at any place for creative flash effect (back-light, for example), at a fraction of the cost of a full-sized flash head and additional transmitter. Product delivered with a set of gels of different colours, adding to the creativity range. Then, the integrated variable LED is able to give some additional light for video shooting, but again, limited output, comparable to these small "light cubes" for video shooting, so no more than close range subject. With rechargeable batteries in it, the flash (2 AA) and emitter (integrated battery) can be reloaded with a double-USB C cable provided. Quite convenient. But note that the flash is off when charging ... could be an useful implementation for the next version to be able to "charge and shoot" ! Very satisfied with this flash, once the limited power output from the flash head and LED is acknowledged. The detachable head from the transmitter, and the integrated LED are a real bonus and allow for a wide range of creative images ... if the subject is not too far away. I recommande it for a start in flash photography and/or video, or as a small, portable, capable flash complement for specific use, at a very affordable and justified cost.

I love this flash - so compact and doubles as a battery charger. No TTL, but that really doesn't matter for me and I use it with different camera systems anyway.

First off, if you’re wondering if it works with Leica Q2 cameras, it does. 2nd, this flash offers a lot of value for the money. It’s a on camera flash, the unit can be detached from the hotshoe and it becomes a wireless off camera flash. The unit is also a solid video light and it gets pretty bright. Comes with gels so you can experiment with different colors. Overall, it’s a pretty solid package. Doesn’t add much weight to camera. It runs on double A batteries but be sure to get rechargeable Ni-MH batteries so you use the included micro usb for charging. If I can offer feedback to manufacturer: include usb c in a future update.
