Q: Can you drink thicker liquid like smoothies out of the straw? Or does it get clogged in the no spill valve?

I would not put any liquids in this thicker than Gatorade. It does get clogged. You can however find the ones made like this but without the straw and use that style instead. I like the stainless steel insides without straws because I don't like cleaning involved. Hope that helps!

Q: Can these be use laying down?

I sent them to my granddaughter's baby, but the Best I can remember, I believe they are straws in the cups. So, no the child cannot lay down with the cup. It's best to get the sippy cup, they don't spill and the baby can drink laying down.

With the way they're contoured they'll stack but only the very bottom fits inside the other cup.
