Gregg Shorthand Dictionary 2nd Edition

It’s a shame that shorthand has basically disappeared as a skill from our society. I think back on the 13 years I spent in college and how helpful it would’ve been to know shorthand. If you get good at it, you can write shorthand faster than you can type, and I can type insanely fast. How helpful that would’ve been for all those lectures and all those notes I had to take!! I decided to learn shorthand because once again I’m having to take a lot of notes, but this time I’m taking notes from video lessons. I’m tired of having to constantly pause to write or type the notes, I want to be able to write as fast as they talk so I can learn faster and move faster in the course. Shorthand really is a skill that would benefit anyone who ever had to take notes, which is pretty much everyone! Anyway, this shorthand dictionary has been a lifesaver. I like the Diamond Jubilee version of Gregg Shorthand better than the original, they made some very helpful and rational changes here and there to make Gregg shorthand even faster and easier to read and write. I tried Pitman shorthand, but you pretty much have to use either a pencil or a fountain pen to take notes. I hate taking notes with pencil because pencil fades and rubs off and fountain pens, while I do use them occasionally, are not my go-to pen because they can be a mess and a hassle to deal with. I prefer my gel pens. The marks in Pitman are also too rigid and geometrical, which just isn’t how the human hand generally makes marks. Marks made by the human hand are naturally curved and loopy, and that’s exactly what Gregg shorthand is, it’s much more natural and organic. Because shorthand pretty much disappeared since computers began to be widely used, the only shorthand dictionary I could find was printed in the 70s. It’s a great dictionary to be sure, but it would be wonderful if a newer shorthand dictionary was published with all of the modern words we have now for things and concepts that didn’t even exist in the 70s and so isn’t in this book. Still, I use this dictionary every single day all day as I learn and get better at Gregg shorthand! I should note that for being printed in the 70s, this book was in excellent condition!

I’m getting back into Gregg shorthand after a high school class in 1960-61. It’s not easy. I find this dictionary to be very, very helpful. It’s not clear I could make it without this book.

A great source when wanting to relearn your shorthand skills. Great for note taking especially when writing is no longer easy.
