Q: This is a joke right 10KA that's 10,000 amps.. those connectors are maybe 20a before melting?

They are the manufacturer. Basically the unit is a straight wire inside that measures voltage rise. When a surge takes place the current rise is massive until it shorts and self destructs. It will only take that current for an instant but will protect the device.

Q: Can this be used with just one of the 2 wires?

This product must be used with power supply and load. The input end is the wire access end. The output end is the connection end of the protected equipment, and the PE is the ground wire. Please connect the input end and output end to the corresponding wires respectively. Do not operate with power on, and do not connect them incorrectly.

Q: How will i know when the Arrester is worn out or fails? Is the circuit left left open or closed at that point?

These are typically used in the power supply wiring to the device receiving the supply. Typically when the device fails, it cuts off the power to the device. Its best to contact the manufacturer or to review the specs.
