Q: How do you use it? and does it help with the thumb? my thumbs are painful

You stretch all the fingers. Helpful if you overuse your hands knitting or whatever. Be aware that thumb surgery by a hand surgeon is much more common than you might think. I know because I have had both thumbs done.

Q: What color should I start with?

Well, that's a tough question. It depends on how strong your hand is. I went to occupational therapy and started out light and worked my way up. The Orange helps me with my rheumatoid arthritis and keeps my hands flexible. It depends on how much mobility and dexterity you have. I call it Orange but it may be red:) Hope that helps you.
