Q: Is the rear of this an adhesive?

No, there is no adhesive on these pads. The slide into a grove on Sennheiser headphones such as my HD580s.

Q: how thick is the foam? - I'm considering this cushion as a mod for my Samsung VR headset as a forehead cushion replacement

The foam is half inch thick and quite soft.

Q: Is this compatible with the hd 600, or just the hd 650?

I have the 650s, but I recall from my research at the time that it is also compatible with the 600s.

Q: Would this fit on HD 400s? No right?

I can't be sure, it worked perfectly on my HD650's. Unsnap clips at either end and slip new headband into place.
