Q: Why 'must be used in conjunction with square stand'? what's preventing me from using with any print-receipt-to-usb (star printer) register?

The square stand has the I-Pad power and USB connections needed to connect this unit to a Square POS. You can probably set up your own I-Pad USB hub and power supply on your own but there is no guarantee it would work with Square POS(it should but you are on your own for testing and setup). If you are not using a Square POS system then this is just a plain USB connected printer and cash drawer. whatever you use should have a USB connection and you can plug into that.

Q: Do I need a usb cable for the cash drawer? There isn't a phone jack on the usb hub for the stand.

You need a special cable for the cash drawer. We got ours at the local Radio Shack. Be careful getting the cable though. I bought one from an Amazon dealer that said it would work for the Square Register, and it didn't. It is NOT a regular phone cable. The register needs 4 "ports" coming into the cable (4 colored wires). So be careful, not all cords are the same.

Q: Does it have a built in rechargeable battery? Or does it need to be plugged in to operate?

Only the printer needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet. The cash draw plugs into the printer with a supplied phone cable

Q: Is this cash register and printer compatible with the square register ?

Yes it is. We are using it in our store with the square POS system.
