Not sure of an answer on this, but it does do things more than once, once in awhile. I guess like any cat, it keeps you guessing.

Does this cat meow when you come into the room like the joy for all dog that barks when you enter the room?

Mine meows after I have turned on the switch and thereafter whenever it feels like it! Maybe this is a new model. Of course, I have petted it for sometime to get it going. Then I walk away to do the dishes and it starts meowing....seeming to ask for my attention!

Does it “go to sleep” after a while if not interacting with it to save battery life or do you have to actually shut it off?

This cat was given to my mom Christmas 2019, since she lives alone. The cat is quiet unless someone walks in front of it and the light changes. Then it will emit a small "meow" but if you don't go and pet it, it doesn't do anything further. We have never shut it off.

What’s the deal with this thing?

While this could be considered just an expensive toy for children, I bought it for my sister in a nursing home. Since they cannot have pets in the nursing home for obvious reasons, many of the elderly residents miss their animal companions and quite a few suffer from dementia. This robotic cat provides them with an animal that purrs, meows, licks its paws and even rolls on to its back. It comes with a little brush for them to use to "groom" them and it provides the patient with a purpose of taking care of their animal. It interacts with their petting and grooming. It provides them with comfort and if you have a loved one in such a facility it is a wonderful gift for them. It was a big hit with my sister and so many other residents also loved it.
