Most consistent quality hay! Bunnies love it!
I rarely put a review but I love this box of hay so much that I have to! My bunnies are picky about hay and usually they can tell when it's bad hay. I used to go for oxbow timothy hay but they werent consistent; some batches are just bad depending on the season. But this box has always been consistent and full to the brim! My bunnies love it! I can tell because they rarely scatter the pieces. If they hate it, they'll throw it around looking for good pieces of hay. Please dont ever go out of business 😂

The Best !
This hay is great ! My bunnies never seemed interested in the hay I was giving them & I never saw them eat it. But when I gave them this hay they ate it right away - & a lot of it ! I was so happy since good hay is very important to their diet. The hay is much heartier & fresher than the hay in stores. Thank you for the good quality !

Wonderful Timothy hay for rabbits and guinea pigs!
BEST Timothy hay for our adult guinea pigs! Arrives well packed in a sturdy box which opens and closes easily to keep the hay fresh. Second cutting was recommended by our exotic pet veterinarian for our pets. This hay is the best value for the price and arrives at your doorstep. It keeps them happy and healthy, and is a necessity for their daily diet.

Great quality hay for our rabbits
My bunnies love this hay. They don’t waste it as much as they do with regular Timothy grass. The second cut is on point! The color looks fresh. The texture of it is soft enough and not too firm and the bunnies seem to love the taste. My favorite part about this boxes is that it’s not so packed in stuffed tight that I can’t pull out the hay (unlike oxbow who drives me nuts I can’t pull the hay out it’s so overstuffed packed too tight). This is safe for my bunnies to use then I know the only ingredient is Timothy hay. We haven’t found any weird things in our box. Some people find smooshed mice or rocks in other brands, but we haven’t found anything concerning.

12 lbs is a LOT of hay
First of all, I vastly underestimated how much 12 lbs of hay is - my guinea pigs will probably have hay from this box for several months - that said, one good thing is you get a LOT for your money. I will likely get a smaller box next time - I have a small apartment and I've to keep the box outside on the (covered) porch - the hay has not gotten moldy or discolored or anything. The first thing I noticed about the hay is how GOOD it smelled - it was so fresh. My piggies are very picky so it took a while for them to come around to it - they'd previously been on a bagged hay from the pet store and I think that's all they've ever known (I got them as rescues about a year ago so I'm unsure what they were eating before that). But now they seem to love it. My only complaint is I didn't realize that the hay was not in a bag in the box so I opened this box in my apartment and got hay all over the carpet. I know the reasons for this - that it stays fresher in the box, but I wish I'd known this so I could have opened it outside - I've since relocated it to two plastic garbage bags, but reading through the reviews it seems paper is the way to go so I will be purchasing small paper bags to make little hay snack bags for my piggies. That being said, I will definitely buy this hay again now that I know what to do and I will likely buy a smaller box.

A Tale of Two Hays: Amazon vs. Small Pet Select
Hi small pet owners! I typically do not write reviews but I feel like I had to this time in hopes of helping someone out. I have been ordering this hay more consistently since October 2024. I have gone through a few 10 pound boxes and I have noticed the quality of hay diminishing. It’s very hard, brown, dusty and smells “old” if that makes sense. I have kept ordering it because I believe in Small Pet Select and I love what they stand for. Plus, my guinea pig in the past loved their hay and my bunny seems to have enjoyed the first box. The most recent box I have (see pictures) has so much brown, old, stale hay. But I thought it just came like that, UNTIL I found out that there is a major difference from ordering through Amazon compared to ordering from Small Pet Select DIRECTLY (see pictures). I am pet sitting for my brother and I noticed that his box of hay barley has any brown and it’s so lush, green and sweet smelling. That’s when he told me that he orders directly from Small Pet Select instead of Amazon. I WAS FLOORED and also extremly disappointed in this multi billion dollar company. Our pets deserve the best and if Amazon cannot provide their customers with the same quality as the original retailer then there’s a problem. If you made it this far then I hope you will join me in no longer ordering hay through Amazon and instead order directly from the source, in this case, Small Pet Select. It may be more expensive but the quality is worth it. Please, take it from someone that has made the mistakes so you wouldn’t have to. I was watching an ad yesterday (June 20, 2025) and saw that you can get 10% off hay from Small Pet Select by using this code: Hay10. Our pets are part of our family and should be treated as so. Best of luck small pet owners and please learn from my mistakes. —— Sincerely, A Bun Dad

For my bunny, Second Cutting is the way to go!
When I first got my bunny as a baby I was feeding him alfalfa hay along with other veggies and a few pellets - he was already eating regular food. The thing with the alfalfa hay is that he was picking out the softer stuff and leaving behind the "sticks", so when it came time to invest in hay my first purchase from SPS was 3rd cutting because it is "softer" - so I bought the 40lb box. I have done farm work in the past and I know about hay. My first impression was of how there was so much brown and so little green. I thought that would change as I used the hay but it didn't change much, and it turns out as an adult my bunny preferred the crunchier stuff. That wasn't a problem because there was plenty of crunchy stuff, but then we came to the last 1/3 of the box, which was all shreds, fluffy stuff and dusty stuff. I needed to buy more hay, and now knowing he prefers the crunchier stuff, I chose to purchase the 25lb box of second cutting from SPS. Wow! It was like night and day! 100% green, highly compressed (the top of the box was bulging when I got it) and the bunny absolutely loves it and is now eating more hay. I didn't even keep going with the old box, and I think this 25lb box is going to last longer than the bigger one! I have nothing to complain about with my purchase of second cutting, and have since found out that most bunnies are fed second cutting unless they are older and need softer hay, or picky eaters. The thing I know about 3rd cutting is that it is the one MOST affected by summer - whether there are dry conditions and for how long, etc. This product came perfectly packed, UPS dropped it a day early, and the quality of the hay is top notch. I will probably stick with this brand and second cutting now for the foreseeable future, and would recommend Small Pet Select.

The Best Customer Service (and Hay!)
I've been ordering Small Pet Select hay for quite awhile now, and while the hay is great, the customer service is even better. With hay being a natural product, there are inevitably going to be issues once and awhile. Each time the Small Pet Select crew have gone above and beyond to help, and they are incredibly easy to get ahold of. I've usually contacted them over FB with a message to their business page and they are very quick to respond. Now, onto the hay. The 2nd cut timothy hay they offer is not only the best hay I've been able to find, it's often cheaper than others when I buy in the 20 or 25lb boxes. It's always a lovely shade of green, and the smell is just so perfect! My chinchillas and bunnies are always so excited for "Fresh Hay Day!", which is the day the new shipment of hay comes in. With my two chinchillas and two rabbits (one of them being a 14lb continental giant!), I go through about 20lbs every 6 to 7 weeks, so being able to get this quality and quantity of hay shipped right to be has been a blessing. And speaking of shipping, it often arrives quicker than Amazon estimates, usually only taking two to three business days after it ships from a SPS warehouse. (They don't store their hay at Amazon warehouses, they ship from one of their own warehouses. I asked them myself, so don't worry about getting hay that's been lingering in the Amazon warehouse for forever!) My little critters just eat it right up, and it keeps their tummies happy and consistent! The strands are often really long which the bunnies love, but can be too much for the chinchillas to handle, so I tend to cut bundles in half length wise for the chinchillas. A good pair of kitchen or garden shears is best for this if you choose that route. Just make sure they're clean. TLDR; Great hay, even better customer service. Order it!
