Q: will this work with a Nikon 200-500mm lenses Gitzo tripod arca swiss ball head?

We recommend the Wimberley P-30 Lens plate for the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 E ED VR. We recommend a Series 3 or better in the Gitzo line.We recommend an Arca-Swiss compatible ball head that is rated to support 2-to-3 times the actual weight of the camera/lens/accessories/Sidekick that are attached to the ball head.

Q: What are the 3 holes at the end? Are they 1/4" threaded or or what? Website not helpful.

The three unthreaded holes and the small slot on one end of the plate allow the use of older style Kirk Photo and ReallyRightStuff flash brackets.

Yes, if you wish use both the lens plate screws when mounting the P-30 to the base of the Sony 70-400 f/4-5.6 G SSM you will need to purchase a BS-100 threaded bushing. Sony offers 2 mounting holes on the base of this lenses foot: one is 1/4-20 and the other is 3/8-16. Our lens mounting screws are 1/4-20, so if you wish to use two screws to mount the lens plate, then you will need to use the BS-100 bushing adapter in the base of the lens foot.
