Q: What size ear buds do these take?

I would say most will fit as they are mostly all universal in size.

Q: Are the kz zax semi open back, the pictures and advertising even on kz's website don't make it clear.

These IEM's have slots in the back and on close inspection there is a mesh grill inside. This would suggest that they are vented, but short of dismantling them, I could not be certain. What I would say is that they sound extremely good and well beyond what might be expected at this price point. So given the technical specification they are really quite remarkable.
