Planetes Omnibus Volume 1 is the first half of the Planetes story. A story written as one of the most scientifically grounded science fiction stories in recent memory, it speaks of characters working in space. Each character has their own motivations and goals, suffer their own setbacks and losses, and stare into that void of space and contemplate just what humanity needs to secure to make it in that vacuum.Storywise, I'm a big fan of Planetes. I read the full story a long time ago, and this new omnibus does exactly what it says by showing the first half of the story. While we don't have some of the more exciting moments that were present in the second half of planetes, we do get the amazing story of Hachimaki as he attempts to reach as far as he can in the world. The book itself seems pretty well made. The stories have the first few pages illustrated in color, which is a rather unique way of putting markers between chapters. its not hard to flip at random, find some color pages that draw your eyes, and hop into a certain section of the story. As to flipping through, I'll say that the spine seems pretty well made. I have doubts about it lasting forever, but its held up admirably during my flipping and pulling to better look at details. My only complaint would be that a small amount of book covering on the outer spine has started scratching off, but that's to be expected from any book handled roughly.Planetes is a great story, and this book does a phenomenal job presenting it. My only real concern is that rough handling may not keep the book together for long, and that the second half of this omnibus isn't already out!

Phenominal Hard Sci-Fi Story and Artwork
After enjoying the anime (a few times over) so much, I found out that this Manga is what it was based upon, and snap-bought bought of the 2-part Omnibus series. Very good reads, very impressive detail in all of the artwork - and interesting to read and compare to the anime - would recommend to anyone interested in Sci-Fi, especially Hard Sci-Fi!

Out of this world greatness
It is beautiful to look at and beautiful to read. To call it a slice of life space Odyssey would cheapen the depth of this manga's scope. There's nothing else quite like it. If you love character development, philosophy, politics, raw emotion and stunning action, this manga has it all. I cannot reccomend it to you enough.

Show me what you got, you space defense cowards!
This omnibus edition contains the first half of the complete Planetes story. Having only been familiar with the anime version I was pleasantly surprised to find that I like this even better, the artwork is sharper and there is plenty of time to admire the details. On the surface, Planetes seems primarily concerned with space debris removal in Earth’s atmosphere but as you progress further into the story it becomes clear that the characters and their humanity are really what this story is about, which is good. The illustrations are excellent, with great attention to realistic space design engineering and an appropriately vast scale of space, but it’s the main characters that kept me turning the pages. My favorite has to be Hachi’s dad who shows up about halfway through and unleashes much chaos with his crazy lifestyle. By the time Tanabe arrived on the scene as a green recruit I was hooked, you might as well order Volume 2 before you finish this one. Come for the artwork, stay for the rounded characters and deep philosophical underpinnings, this one’s a keeper.

Funny and poignant
Great charcters who are each flawed, but you root for them. Also, great use of comedy relief to pair with some of the more serious scenes. I feel like I grew a little as a person after reading.

Nice manga
Well written and slow pace. Not the kind of manga for people looking a lot of action.
