Q: Does this work with the nikon d5300 model?

Don't buy it; piece of junk. I tried it using it with my Nikon D300 with two Nikon SB-800 Flash and my two flashes started to flash on their own. Your better off looking into the Phottix Odin radio slave system. That's what I use and now I'm happier than a pig in mud. LOL.

I've used it on my D500, though I'm only using one shoe as hot (flash) and the other as a microphone mount.

Q: Can you use this on non-hot shoe things (monitor, mic, etc) or does it make the camera think it's a hot shoe and drain battery?

I use mine for a mic. I can't say that I've actually evaluated battery performance with and without this device, but I doubt there is an electrical circuit completed unless you have a flash or something that's actually using the contacts. My mic has a plain plastic foot, so nothing electrical is happening. I think you're good to go.
