Q: Is this crop protected with pesticides?

The farm of origin is Finca Nueva Granada, Guatemala. From their website: http://www.nuevagranada.com/ "Sustainable Agriculture: The coffee cherry pulp and organic matter are composted and used as organic fertilizer and we have begun to compost macadamia shells as well. The farm follows all the Rainforest guidelines for sustainable agriculture, using only the few approved agro-chemicals. We are experimenting with natural methods to control insects and use farm-made traps to catch the coffee borer" Hope this information was useful to you.

Q: is this coffee shade grown and I don't see organic anywhere on the package. Is that important? I understand coffee is a heavily sprayed crop.

I cannot find any information on the shade question re Farm: Finca ueva Granada, Bourbon. It's in the Antigua basin at about 1800 meters elevation. I must say, this is some of the most delicious coffie I've roasted and I buy it over & over again (along with Sumatra and Nicaragua, my other avorites). I usually roast three batches and blend the three - one batch medium, one a little darker and one dark - awesome blend! As for organic, if you're concerned of the spraying, I cannot say if this farm sprays or not, but the coffee cherry has a hard outer shell, which protects the inner seed/bean from the vast majority of any unhealthy affects of the spraying. So, I personally do not see much benefit from going "organic" with coffee, just as with bananas or nuts. I hope this note helps. Enjoy the coffee!
