Q: Is it worth the extra $50 for these speakers over the xlbp series at $199.99? not really concerned with the cost, just any added advantage.

For anyone else reading this question the answer is yes. I've owned both and now have 4 of these in a 7.1.4 setup. The imaging is night and day and the dispersion is night and day. One word of caution though, they do not go that loud. My Yamaha 2060 only feeds the surround speakers and has plenty of power to do so since I amp the front 3. I listen to demanding movies at reference volume and pushed them too hard once to see what I could get. They get loud enough for effects for 99.9% of people including myself but if you're putting them against the Def Tech bipolars(which I also had) they will lose. These were the right shape for what I needed and is why I no longer have the other speakers

I have found these are very flexible in placement. They have been freestanding on shelves with 6+ inches of backspace and directly against the wall (current). Both sound great and Audyssey crosses them over at 80hz in both setups.

Bipolar speakers were originally introduced in THX 5.1 systems and should be mounted on the wall to the sides of the listener. They are wide-dispersion speakers that establish a great sound field! I have a Fluance Signature 7.1 system with the Signsture bookshelf speakers in front and rear, a Signature center channel speaker, a pair of the Signature wide-dispersion bipolar speaker mounted to the walls on the sides. I also have a pair of Sony upfiring Atmos height speakers. The system sounds awesome!
