Q: How often do you need to replace the filter?

It mainly depends on how dirty is the air in your place. I replaced mine (the main expensive filter) after 3 years. But I think I could easily have stretch out to 4+ yrs. As far as the outer dust filter, I replace it annually or just wash and use. There was no instructions on that.

Q: How well does this work for seeping second hand cigarette smoke?

Hi Marcia,We have no smokers at our house, so I can't rightly write what it could do with cigarette smoke. I can write that when I put our oven on 'clean' w/my cast iron skillets inside to clean them up simultaneously, the Austin Air took care of the residue in the oven as well as on my skillets. I also had an incident when I mistakenly used soybean oil to cook -- I react to soy -- the smoke was bad and a migraine started to come on. The Austin Air took care of that too within 15 minutes of having it on. I avoided a full blown migraine. I hope that helps you.

Q: how large an area in square feet, does this cover?

The smaller units are marketed for areas up to 700 sq ft, but as the other seller mentioned, you really want to make sure that you are getting more "air changes" so that you are seeing full benefits from the unit. The JR units are good for small to average size rooms.

Q: Without a light indicate filter is dirty, how tell? Unbolt the top? "Every 5 yrs" is vague, doesn't account for less/more use or level of dirt in air.

Automatic timers are not helpful, anyway. We have a general guidance in this house that we will replace filters at the recommended interval, regardless of usage (high or low), UNLESS my daughters start reacting to chemicals in the house and the filters don’t clear them out. They are both chemically sensitive (beyond normal ranges), so we have Austin Air filters in every room. These are the only filters we have tried that they do not react to out of the box, since they have metal, not plastic, housing.
