No, this is not a negative ion generator. It does not cause dirt and dust to cling to walls.

Q: Can this be plugged in upside down or sideways and still work properly?

Yes. It's a zapper coil and a fan. As air passes by the zapper coil it gets zapped with electricity causing o2 oxygen molecules to come apart and rebond as o3 ozone. Then when the o3 molecules touch anything organic the third molecule of oxygen goes pow and destroys the organic molecules it touched leaving behind a microscopic ash and an o2 oxygen. It can run fine in any position as long as it stays dry.

Q: The description says to only use in unoccupied space. If I understand correctly it can only run while we are not home? Seems counterproductive.

I run mine in my house while I am there. I believe it means in an area free of obstruction. It makes a humming sound so you don’t want it near a tv or radio, etc.
