Q: How does this compare to LaVoz reeds? I use medium soft in those.

Hello, I'm sorry but I can't include an opinion of LaVoz reeds, I've never try them. But if you like a metallic, high pitch sound, these are definitely not the reeds you are looking for. These reeds give you a complete sound, away from the high pitch harmonics. They are easy to control reaching the higher andlower notes easily (depending on your mouthpiece). If this description fits your expectation I would definitely give them a try.

Q: Which size of reed is suitable for alto sax?

Any reed that says ALTO will work in an alto sax mouthpiece. The key question is the hardness, usually beginners go for 1.5 - 2.5 more advanced go for 2.5 - 3.5. Hope ir helps

Filed refers to a cut the width of the reed at the point where the cut on the reed creates a curve. Unfiled is more suitable for beginners since the file requires a somewhat more developed embouchure to handle properly.
