Knowing Christ

Knowing Christ (as the title somewhat suggests) is something of a companion volume or follow-up to J.I. Packer’s classic work, Knowing God (which is probably my all-time favorite Christian book). Packer’s Foreword in the beginning of the book makes it clear that he himself enthusiastically commends it.It is no secret that J.I. Packer is a long-time aficionado of and expert on the Puritans, so it is especially fitting that someone like Jones (whom Packer calls “an established expert on many aspects of puritan thought”) would be the one to take up the proverbial mantel in writing this volume.The influence of the Puritans is clearly evident throughout the book, as Jones freely cites such luminaries as Thomas Brooks, Stephen Charnock, John Flavel, Thomas Goodwin, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, and Thomas Watson. There are also numerous quotations from other giants in the Reformed tradition, such as John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, B.B. Warfield, Herman Bavinck, Abraham Kuyper, and Geerhardus Vos. Most importantly, Jones grounds everything in Scripture, and backs up much of what he says with references to the Reformed Confessions and Catechisms.Having said all of that in the above paragraph, what if I told you that this is truly one of the finest devotional books that you will ever read? That is one of the most remarkable things about this book – Jones takes what can be a very complex subject (Christology), brings the writings of some of the greatest theological minds in the history of the church to bear on the subject, and somehow makes it all eminently readable and accessible. And he does all of that in only 232 pages! Perhaps my only complaint (if anything) is that I wish the book were about twice as long. (I also wish it were available in hardback, but I digress.)I had a very difficult time putting this book down, and literally had to force myself to read only one chapter per day,as I was trying to treat it as devotional reading. (If not for that, I probably would have read the entire book in just a matter of days.)There are few things more needful for Christians in our day (or any day!) than to know Christ better. And yet there are (as Jones himself points out in the Introduction) shockingly few books available on that subject. This book will go a long way toward helping to fill that void. It is far and away my favorite new book of 2015.Get this book. Read this book. Re-read this book. (I certainly plan to do so.)May the Lord Jesus Christ be pleased to grant this book a wide readership for many years and decades to come. And may many people come to know Christ and/or know Him better through what is found within its pages

I'm actually a bit surprised by the impact this book has had on me. I became a believer in my early 20s and here I am in my 60th year. I have read my Bible and material from a number of Christian authors. My shelves are pretty full. Yet this book is a stand out. More on that in a moment.As one other reviewer stated, I don't have a lot to add to the reviews already posted. Jones presents the attributes of Jesus much as Packer did in "Knowing God." I'm writing this for two reasons: 1) To get another review online to reinforce how good this book is and 2) To emphasize the way this book has impacted me.It really has touched my heart... particularly the chapters "Christ's Sayings" and "Christ's Death." I'm not sure why. It could be timing. It could be that at the end of a year we reflect more on what has happened in our past. It could be that I was ready for a deep read - one that really challenged me. Not sure. What I can say is that the chapters are short but pack a lot in just a few pages. One reviewer mentions the number of verses quoted throughout the text. I agree that you won't want to read this without your Bible -or- Bible app handy.Not a fast read... but a great one!

What a fabulous book. Obviously I knew going in that I was going to learn something, even though I have read my share of books on the topic of the God-man, Jesus. I am afraid to say that I almost passed this book up. But I am so thankful I didn't. Mark Jones gave me some new and refreshing perspective on the God-man, Jesus Christ. There were times I read over the material because of familiarity. But a good number of times, I slowed down to digest and savor the truth he was trying to reveal through Scripture.Another element of this book that I appreciated was Mark Jones' writing style. If you're familiar with puritan writing style, then reading Mark Jones for the first time will bring familiarity to your experience. In a good way. He does well to place his style in our current culture. He has a distinguished style of writing that is fresh in reading, giving me a different and wonderful experience.

Knowing Christ is not a book to read through in a hurry. Rather it is a book to be read prayerfully and devotionally and with your bible open. Bible references abound throughout the book and most readers will learn to see him in a new way or struggle with some of the conclusions. Mark Jones says in his introduction “The goal of this book is to look at the person of Christ and give readers particularly those in the church - a reason to love him more. We can only love him more by knowing him better – which takes us beyond conceptual to relational knowledge.” Jones has reached this goal brilliantly. Readers will know Christ and grow in that knowledge if they open their hearts and take the time to feast on the biblical wisdom and insight here. I plan to read and reread this book.

I'm writing this review after only reading a few chapters. That's how good this book is. It's is so rich theologically that I'm taking my time to not just read, but absorb everything that's being said. Having read Knowing God by J.I. Packer, I can see the similarities here, except the emphasis is on Jesus here versus God in the other book. This book is a great accompaniment to the other, where he intertwines Jesus with God. Because you can't have one without the other lol. I highly recommend this book.

Doch wie oft setzen wir uns mit Dem auseinander, der uns gemacht hat? Der Startschuss für eine eingehende Beschäftigung fiel erst vor wenigen Jahren – nach dem Theologiestudium! Auftakt und Türöffner war der Longseller von J. I. Packer „Gott erkennen“ („Knowing God“). Packer hat eindrücklich dargestellt, wie wichtig es ist, sich mit Gott auseinanderzusetzen, um unser Leben zu gestalten. Es hat mich nicht erstaunt zu erfahren, dass der ursprüngliche Anstoss zu „Knowing Christ“ ebenfalls von diesem Buch herkam. Wir werden in der Bibel aufgefordert „in der Erkenntnis unseres Herrn Jesus Christus“ zu wachsen (2. Petrus 3,18). Nur: Wie kommen wir diesem Auftrag nach? Wir sind uns gewohnt, uns mit uns selbst und unserem Wohlergehen auseinanderzusetzen. Christus spielt in unserem Leben ehrlicherweise oft die Rolle eines Zulieferers für unser Glück. Doch wie kann es geschehen, dass er selbst unser Glück wird? Eine nahe liegende Antwort lautet: Setzen wir uns gezielt und vertieft mit dem auseinander, was in seinem Wort von ihm offenbart wird!Der Autor Mark Jones ist Co-Autor von „Puritan Theology“, einem über 1000-seitigen Werk mit knapp 60 Kapiteln zur weit verzweigten Theologie der Puritaner. Neben dem tiefen Graben und Eintauchen in die Bibel – es sind Hunderte von sorgfältig gewählten Schriftbezügen eingeflossen – hinterlegt Jones die Gedankengänge mit treffenden Zitaten der Puritaner und der Kirchenväter. Er versteht die Studie in einer Mischung von theologischer Exploration und erbaulicher Literatur. Das Buch wird von diesem doppelten Anliegen getragen. Oft genug fehlt entweder das eine oder das andere! Das Buch besteht aus 27 Kapiteln, in Einheiten zu acht bis zwölf Seiten portioniert. Der Kerngedanke wird gleich zu Beginn des Kapitels angekündigt und in den letzten Zeilen prägnant zusammengefasst. Der Inhalt ist demnach didaktisch sauber aufbereitet.Durch die Entfaltung von 27 Aspekten, ausgehend vom ewigen Bund des dreieinigen Gottes, der Menschwerdung, Gottheit und Menschheit Christi, dem Heiligen Geist als ständigem Begleiter während seines ganzen Lebens auf der Erde, seines Glaubens, der Bandbreite seiner Emotionen, seines Wachstums, seines Studiums des Alten Testaments, den Gebeten, der Sündlosigkeit, den Versuchung, der Demütigung hin zur Verwandlung, den Wundern, den sieben letzten Worten am Kreuz, seinem Tod und der Auferstehung, seiner Erhöhung und seinem Einsatz für sein Volk, den Ämtern als Priester, Prophet und König bis zum kommenden Zorn wird ein umfassendes Panorama entfaltet. Dies trägt dazu bei, die vielen Jesus-Bilder, die wir aufgebaut haben und die in vielen Gemeinden landläufig gepflegt werden, zu hinterfragen und einige mit biblischeren zu ersetzen.Drei Dinge haben mich besonders beschäftigt: Die konsequent christologische Auslegung des Alten Testaments, insbesondere der Psalmen. Jones spricht nicht darüber, sondern praktiziert diese gleich. Zweitens sind es Aspekte über Person, Leben und Werk von Christus, die ich bisher noch nie überhaupt oder nur ungenügend beachtet habe. Ich wurde angeleitet, über die Tiefe des Gotteszorns nachzudenken oder über die Auferstehung, die von Christus selbst mit-initiiert wurde (vgl. Joh 10,18). Ich habe mir noch kaum Gedanken gemacht, welche Wichtigkeit dem Eintreten Christi für sein Volk zukommt, ebenso wenig der Gemeinschaft des Heiligen Geistes für den Dienst des Gottesohnes. Ich hatte bisher noch nie bedacht, dass Christus als Mensch das Alte Testament gelesen hat. Oder wie er nach seiner Menschwerdung dauernd gedemütigt wurde; wie ihn das Gebet bis zum Schluss begleitete. Drittens wurde ich mir der wunderbaren Tatsache der Einheit mit Christus verstärkt bewusst. Wir haben von uns aus nichts vorzuweisen, ausser dass wir ihm gehören (4). Nicht er ist in erster Linie für uns in die Welt gekommen, sondern wir sind ursächlich für ihn in der Welt (9).Jones wertet den Hunger, tiefer in die Geheimnisse des Christus – soweit sie offenbart sind – einzudringen nicht als Anmassung, sondern als gesundes Anzeichen (177). Der Autor vergisst nicht, in jedem Kapitel die Brücke zu uns zu schlagen. Wir können Christus nicht ohne sein Volk haben. Damit steht der Autor in gut reformatorischer und puritanischer Tradition. Analog den Formulierungen des Heidelberger Katechismus „was nützt es uns…“, stellt er die Bedeutung der einzelnen Aspekte von Christus für uns heraus. Dabei hat er uns Menschen nicht als Konsumenten im Fokus, sondern als dankbare Empfänger unverdienter und unerwarteter Zuwendungen und einer zuverlässigen Hoffnung. Christus ist unser Vorbild. So fehlt es uns Christen z. B. an gerechtem Zorn (71). Oder haben wir schon bedacht, dass es angesichts der Demütigung Christi keine Situation geben kann, die zu erniedrigend für uns wäre (159)?
