Casablanca: 70th Anniversary [Blu-ray] [US Import]

Most excellent film. Great story, superb acting, and fantastic ending. Among the best with actors Humphrey Bogart, Claude Rains, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet, Paul Henreid among others. Surely should be on the top of anyone’s list, especially if they despise injustice.

A classic film and worth watching again and again..... All those memorable lines! "Here's looking at you kid..." etc. Very good

Just brilliant. If you've ever been dumped by a woman only for her to turn up several years later then you'll understand Humphrey Bogarts character. Pure genius of a movie with some classic lines, superb acting and some humour. This is acting and movie directing at its best. It doesn't get any better than this. I don't think it's a woman's movie but it's a man's movie. Men will get what this movie is really about. The close up of Ingrid Bergman's face as a tear slowly forms is pure perfection.

My purchase of Casablanca's 4K was prompted after seeing it was available on I-player and watching parts of it, also a clip on U-tube. I must say seeing this film in 4K was a revelation to see such a finely detailed image that had so much depth to it. On my Panasonic 820UHD you can monitor the bit rate of the image. This 4K version has as far as I can judge an average bit rate of between 60Mbps to 70Mbps per second with a peak value of over 100Mbps and a minimum of about 50Mpbs. Comparing these figures to the Blu-ray it had an average of between 20Mbps to 30Mbps with a peak value slightly over 30Mbps. I then played the DVD from the three disc special edition of Casablanca that I already owed.....the bit rate on this DVD had a very a meagre average bit rate of about 4Mbps to 7Mbps with an absolute maximum figure of 10Mbps. I played on my 4K TV via two Panasonic players roughly in sync the 4K version and the Blu-ray.... I think if you watched the Blu-ray version on its own you would have been fairly satisfied....however it was very noticeable flicking between the two versions how much better the 4K disc looked compared to the Blu-ray. I then played the DVD in sync with I-player; the DVD was only slightly better and very poor in comparison to the 4K version which must be as close to perfection as will ever be possible. I suppose on film it would be like comparing a Super 8mm film print to a pristine 35mm print. Its a must have copy if you have 4K equipement.

Although this is a vintage movie, it is certainly something of a classic. It has memorable character acting, sharp editing, romance and drama. There is definite electricity between the characters played by Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart - which is fascinating to watch with modern eyes given that smouldering sex appeal and sensuality are mplied rather than overtly revealed.

I'm not going to go into the details and subplots of Casablanca, plenty of people have done that already, my review is purely on this special anniversary edition and restoration set of Casablanca which is available as a Blue-ray + Ultraviolet copy and comes in a Steelbook case, which has the film poster inked on the surface and looks pretty cool. The tonal quality and overall crispness of the print is absolutely first-class, in fact it looks as if it could have just been made and not sixty years ago! It's so fresh and exciting to watch and the audio has been cleaned up so although still a mono soundtrack, it still comes through just fine. My only gripe is that their is no accompanying booklet inside the case, which i would have expected with it being a pivotal anniversary release. The "Master of Cinema" series spoil us with these booklets which are always well made and of high quality, forr many of their releases, which detail the history of a given film, the actors and production crew, as well as other general ephemera. This is a region free disc, so you can play it in any blu-ray player you have at home, which is a nice touch. Still i give four stars, one being deducted for the lack of booklet.

If you watch film this is a must. One of greatest love stories of all time.
