Q: How does it protect against over watering? I read the description on how it absorbs water better, but wouldn't that make over watering more frequent?

It has little white crystals that hold water and when the soil gets dry the crstals release the water they're holding. You can still over water but less likely. Also if you forget to water at times the crystals take care of it.

Q: Is this a soil or fertilizer?

This is a potting mix enhanced with fertilizer. The fertilizer in the soil feeds for 6 months, so no additional plant food is needed.

Q: do you need to use shultz plant food with this?

I don’t know. It made my plant grow.

Q: How long will this last unopened? What is its effective shelf-life before I have to use it?

It's soil, it should last forever
