40 inch length, 15 inch width, is 600 sq inches. if youre using this soil, youre probably doing a planted tank, so youll probably want at least 2" of substrate. so were at 1200 cubic inches. 1200 cubic inches is 19.66 liters. You would need 2.18 of these bags for 2" depth

Q: Can I add it to an up and running aquarium?

Not recommend. There will be too much suspended nutrients in the water column.

Q: Since this in the beginning causes high ammonia levels should I wait until it has a normal reading to plant plants?

You can plant it right away and do extensive water change for the fist 2 weeks, or wait till 2~3 weeks later then plant the plants when the ammonia has drop down.

Q: Can this be using for the Walstad method?

Yes, it could. Just be aware of how it effects the water parameters.
