Q: How do i switch from heat to cold?

not quite right -- by the instructions, if the start temperature stop, then COOL. It should be set, otherwise the device would not know if the start temperature is to trigger cooling (too hot), or heating (too cold). The start>stop also allows a minimal overshoot as well. The greater than/less than can be a 0.1 degree difference, if desired.

Q: How exactly does the cycle timer work? The directions on this aren't very clear. I am wanting it to come on every hour and stay on for a few minutes.

I don't think it will cycle that often. I set mine for temp it works grear

Q: Is the thermostat in the remote or the plugin switch?

the Temperature sensor is on the remoter body, It automatically sends singal to the plugin controller on the wall.

Q: Is this a 'line of sight' remote, will it work from a different room?

I just tried it, I moved the remote to a different room and it worked, I guess it works on radio frequency.
