Q: Will this jig work with a wen 4286 grinder? are there any other attachments needed for lathe tools?

If your support bar has a 12mm diameter this jig will work with that. There are a few other Tormek lathe tool related jigs. Check out TNT-808 which is the the kit that holds them.

Q: The pictures show the jig clamped to a bar , which appears to be clamped to the grinder. Where is that bar rig purchased??

The jig is designed to be used with the Tormek grinder. The grinder includes the bar rig. Not cheap but works wonderfully well.

Q: What's the difference between the svd-185 and the svd-186?

The SVD-186R replace the SVD-186 and SVD-185. The updated SVD-186R had a new additional locking screw allows you to fix the Gouge Jig’s rotational movement at the desired location. With this feature, it will be easier to maintain full control when sharpening carving tools such as V-tools. The locking screw also facilitates grinding to a completely flat bevel on violin making knives and chip carving knives when using the MB-100 Multi Base and Tormek Diamond Wheels.

Q: Does this jig do everything the SVS-50 can?

The SVD-186R Gouge Jig is designed to sharpen various gouges such as bowl , spindle, curved gouges, turning cutters and violin making knives. The SVS-50 Multi Jig is used for larger roughing gouges, parting and Bedan tools, skew chisels, gouges with straight shanks.
