Bad Boys for Life [DVD] [2020]

Good to watch and save

Bad Boys For Life pulls no punches! It's a good, fun action flick that has moments of silliness surrounded by some pretty cruel violence. One death in particular stands out as a darn shame for the franchise. The opening scene is pretty predictable for anyone who grew up watching action cinema or anyone who's seen Furious 6! But it sets the early tone well. Some nice call backs to the original films while showing us how the Bad Boys have aged and must come to terms with modern policing. Unfortunately, some of the laughs are now pretty stale and the chemistry between Martin and Will doesn't have the same playful charm anymore. Even the 4th Lethal Weapon managed to keep it up! That's not to say it isn't funny, just not the way I personally would prefer. Some of the action is well handled if incredibly short. The end shootout is a bit longer and more entertaining but it lacks the scale of the originals and even more modern action films can top it easily. The character development outside of the core is non existent which is a shame for new viewers. People who watched the originals will appreciate Theresa Randle as Marcus's wife and love the rants of Joe Pantoliano as Capt. Howard but newbies might find it a bit full on! The AMMO team is set up nicely for the future spin-off with a good mix of crew. Vanessa Hugens is a stand out for me simply because she has amazing hair! But whoever this Charles Melton is, he needs to go. Really annoying character who is not redeemed in my eyes. Paola Nuñez is a great boss who keeps them in line and gets the job done. Rounding out the team is Alexander Ludwig as a gentle giant with a dark side. The picture quality is top notch. The 4K image is one of the best modern film transfers. I personally prefer the older films with a nice amount of grain but then I'm a film snob! But from a technical point of view the image is great. Apparently it's from a 2K DI which makes it even more impressive! The night scenes stand out due to an impressive black levels and the colours pop out really nicely. The Blu-ray version holds up well next to the UHD but the lower resolution and lack of HDR makes the UHD version a no-brainer. The audio is super punchy with a DTS-X track on the UHD and a 5.1 track on the Blu-ray. The only time I complain about audio is if I can't hear dialogue over the music or if I have to keep turning it up or down in different scenes. That didn't happen here so all good and to hear the updated version of the Bad Boys theme is marvellous! Overall a good film with a crazy, twisted story part written by mad lad Joe Carahan who is responsible for Narc, Smokin' Aces, The Grey and the A-Team reboot. I've also added an extra star because it isn't directed by that hack Michael Bay!
