It is measured in European cup size, not US Standard. This is because European cups are small, about four fluid ounces, and usually the brewers are marked for these small cups. A "12-cup brewer" usually holds about a quart and a half: 12 European cups, requiring 12 scoops of coffee.

Q: There is another instance of this coffee maker on Amazon with reviews (mostly negative) going back to 2009. Is there any difference between the two?

I have had the 10 cup Moccamaster for a couple of months. This coffee maker has worked out very well for me. The coffee is consistently good. It's not too complex to use. I had most recently been using a Keurig. The coffee with this new machine is significantly better tasting and more reasonable per serving. To me it's more like coffee house coffee.
