Q: Can I view my old slides on this lightbox?

You may find it a bit bright for continued use with slides. It's intended for tracing, so most viewers would have papers between their eyes and the light, hence the need for added brightness.

Q: Can children use this as a light box with objects?

The box is like the lid of a shoe box on top of that box, only square shaped. A light box would be the shoe box without a lid. So I would say no.

Q: Is it possible to set two side by side in a custom desk to make a larger work area? I know it’s possible but will they sit flush against one another?

They would be level for what ever you lay over the surface. I believe there would be an area of reduced light betweenn the area where the two screens are adjacent. You could always lay a similar light transmitting surface over both or perhaps purchase a lareger one to fit the size you wish unles you are seeking the versatility. I use mine (actually have two) in a variety of ways for my photography both as a light source and occasionally for viewing some transparencies shot years ago. More recently as a light source to use as a copy source of light with macro lens to convert to digital.
