The lid is included for making a Pullman loaf for sandwiches or "fancy" appetizers--a loaf with a flat top. The top would not rise and round out organically as it would with no lid. The lid moves very easy when it is hot or cold, the lid slide fast.

I got this question, but I did not buy the corrugated, I bought the flat mini, which I am extremely happy with, it works perfectly.

Q: Does this contain bpa?

The pan has a food grade silicone coating, according to the details listed in the Amazon description of this pan. According to information I found on Google, food grade silicone does not contain BPA. That's the most accurate information I can provide. The pan works great and I have made loaves of "milk bread" or sandwich bread in the pan.
