Amazing sound, but know what you are buying!
Amazing sound pedal! But as the others say: Know what you are buying... even with the Distortion knob at the end it is still a low saturated distortion. But if you are looking for color that's the way to go! (Not that it can't make speakers shake!)If you dial in the neck pickup, toss the distortion at the minimun and the tone at the maximum you can get a really interesting Steve Ray Vaughan sound. An interesting thing about it is, that you can't get a cruncky sound... even with the distortion knob at minimum, it still has a nice round distortion sound... might be a advantage or nor, depend what you are looking. The tone knob is amazing, can make a lot of different and beautiful colors with it.I've being using it for the past month and I'm well pleased to have added this color to my set-up! =D

Big bang for the $$$'s
I picked one of these up after seeing that Keith Urban uses one (check out the interviews with his tech on Guitar.com) and loves it. Though its called a Distortion box its more of an overdrive, that said it can get pretty gained-out at higher settings. The tone knob can make some big changes as well, past twelve it really adds a lot of high end and openness. Below twelve you can definitely get some darker and thicker tones.I actually run it with the distortion all the way down and the tone just past noon, this gives me a nice overdriven tone with a little bit of hair that works with well with guitar volume adjustments. For the price, you can't do much better.

not a bad pedal but not what i wanted either
I was looking for a crunchy type distortion but this is more like a overdrive. I don't hold it against the pedal though. I have a Marshall Class 5 and this pedal actually sounds a little bit like the overdrive I get from the amp, I say this as a compliment. In my case, however, why would I want to replicate what I already have? I'm gonna return it and save up some money to get a BB preamp. You should check out the 78 Badasss Distortion from MXR too.

Decent
I was looking for an Overdrive or Distortion pedal for classic rock, and I finally decided on this one. It's a decent pedal, very solid. However, it is VERY noisy and buzzy when not in use, although all of my distortions are. It sounds a little bit thin and hollow to my ears; it's ok, but I wouldn;t purchase it again or really record with it. It's very light and thin sounding. I'm probably going to get a Full-Tone OCD or something like that instead

Great overdrive!
I love this overdrive! I know that it has distortion III written on its smokin' red exterior but it is an overdrive in my book. it has a great smooth drive which sustains very well.I would say that this pedal stands out from others because of its vitality and uniformity. Some guitar pedals need to be on that ONE setting to sound good or can't be played with this or that pedal. MXR built a pedal that can enhance anything you are doing! This pedal is used to take anything that I am playing up one notch. You just can't go wrong with this amazing overdrive!

I compared it to a boss distortion pedal and found I like the crunch on this one better
This is my first mxr pedal. I compared it to a boss distortion pedal and found I like the crunch on this one better. The boss had more mids, this one sounds meatier. It also seems to do a fair job imitating tube response, the more you put in the more it puts out.

A No.1 Classic!
I use this guy with a Fender Twin, since Overdrive sound is not enough for now a days metal. Not much of noise and practical carry. If you really want to go for something a bit more "Marshall JCM900 like"... get a MXR Custom Badass '78 Distortion. For a extreme... get a Riot!

Beware of the title "Distortion" - It's an Overdrive!
MXR make pretty good Pedals for the money. I thought that this would be a high output, saturated type distortion. It is not. It has plent of Volume, which is good for boosting. But, even with the Gain Knob turned all the way up, this thing is an Overdrive. Which is not a bad thing, if that's what you are looking for. Very Mid-Rangey sound as well. Just not for me. But it's well built and would make a decent OD. But, overall, a pretty Vanilla flavored Dirt Pedal.

Bel sound
Suona molto bene, non è però un distorsore nel senso tipico quanto più un ovedrive molto spinto. Non pensate di farci qualcosa di più dell’hard rock

Great build quality
No issues with the build quality. Tone is a personal thing so can't really comment except to say that I prefer my 40-year old Distortion Plus so I've already resold this in the used market.
