Will this chain work on a (old) 10-speed? Can I use a standard chain tool to pop out links for shortening?

Depends on the condition of the freewheel. If the gear teeth have not been rounded on the edges by extensive wear/usage then the chain will work. If the teeth have been rounded it will skip some or all gears when you apply power through the cranks. If that happens you will need to replace the freewheel as well. Yes a standard chain tool will work to shorten the chain. It's always a good idea to replace freewheel and chain together. eBay is a good source for NOS freewheels for older 10-speeds. NOS=new old stock. Make sure you take measurements so you know what size/make freewheel will fit your bike. The internet has many tutorials to show you how to do this. Then your drivetrain will be good for 3,000-4,000 miles.

If I had to replace the casette, what casette would go with this chain? thx

The 8 in the chain part number 870 is for 8 speed. A 8 speed cassette is needed. A cassette with 8 gears.

What makes this different than the PC 850 SRAM chain?

Differences between PC-850/870/890 are cosmetic, not "rust preventative". PC-850 has all grey link-plates. PC-890 has all nickel/silver plates. PC-870 alternates nickel-outer & grey-inner plates. Chains wear on the pins/bushing, not the plates. Keep them clean and lubed for long life.

Will this fit an old 21 speed bike?

Yes. I use this chain for all of my restorations. This chain works great for all the old road bikes from the 70's and 80's. If it has 5-7 sprockets in the back, this should work. It has the nickel plated links for the class factor. The PC-850 is the same chain without the flash.

Never failed!

This is now my eleven (11) SRAM PC870 chain in my 2006 Raleigh Passage 5.0. I completely clean and lubricate my chain every 500 miles of ride and since the price of it is so reasonable, I replace it every 4000 miles to ensure longevity and integrity of my drive train. This chain has been great, I never experienced a single problem with it, and with the power link is very easy to open for servicing. My bike has now forty-seven (47.000) thousand miles and have replaced it for over 19 years of riding.

These chains are great, especially the 870...

JUST REPLENISHING MY SUPPLY...I GO THROUGH SEVERAL CHAINS A YEAR. TO ME, SRAM CHAINS ARE EXCELLENT. I USE WAX TO LUBE THEM BUT THEY STILL DON'T LAST FOREVER. WAX YOUR CHAIN, PEOPLE. GOOD FACEBOOK AND YOUTUBE VIDEOS AVAILABLE FROM PEOPLE LIKE STEPHEN LEFFANUE, WORTH WATCHING AND FOLLOWING.

Good choice for classic 6/7/8 setups

I added this to my 1996 Pinarello Vuelta running full Campagnolo Chorus 8sp Ergopower with Exa Drive. It's quiet, shifts perfectly and is bright silver to match the components. Installing isn't bad if you know what you are doing.

Great chain, but the image does not match

Arrived VERY fast. I haven't put it on my bike yet as I am awaiting another part that is not arriving so fast, but its a 8 speed chain and I have an 8 speed Gary Fisher.. I can imagine if I were looking to lighten my bike and create some bragging rights I could have found a lighter chain, but I ride hard and long and I don't like to be married to maintenance so my criteria are different than many. I have had a few friends use this chain and have never heard anything bad and you can't beat the price! Note* The image and the chain do not match.. For those buying based on those little details you will notice the difference.. This chain has the bevels in the outer rings between the pins to allow for space for the teeth. I know this is minor, but I also know many are very detailed so I had to give it a 4 star instead of 5 because proper presentation in online showing is SO important...

Durable

These chains hold up; or at least the first one did. This is my second one. The chrome looks nice too, and makes it worthwhile to keep it clean.
