One of those reads you just shouldn't miss...
A completely gripping read, SKATE is one of those books that just stays with you. 15 year old Ian McDermott is a good kid, stuck in a very bad situation. He's struggling the best he can to take care of himself and his 10 year old (slower) brother Sammy. But between Ian's own temper and bad boy/poor kid image, his brothers learning disabilities, a long gone father and a drug addicted mostly MIA mother, who's usually off whoring herself to support her habit or worse, bringing her creepy suppliers back to the house, Ian is only just getting by. That is until he finally loses it on a jerky coach at school and finds himself, with young Sammy in tow, on the run from assault charges. With SKATE, Michael Harmon has created a fantastic realistic and relatable story that will easily captivate audiences of all ages and is sure to tug at even the toughest heartstrings.

an interesting story line
The flow was compelling and satisfying. Perhaps designed more for teens similar to Catcher in the Rye. Take a spin

Great book
This is an excellent book that I've read to my classes (from 5th to 8th grade) for years. Since I teach in an impoverished area where drug use is as common as family problems, Skate is something my students can relate to. Picking a good read-aloud book is hard, and I have yet to miss with this book. A definite winner!

Harmon's best novel
This is Michael Harmon's best book. Its a bit longer, a bit more gritty and mature and real than the others. It also features the best of his protagonists. Ian is tough, smart, and a good guy. He and his bro Sammy make a good duo, and everyone will root for them as they journey to find their dad and save themselves from their wracked mother and her abusive boyfriends. I ran through this book in a day because I was hooked. The writing was good and fairly simple (im 17, and this book is probably for 14-15 year olds at most) the characters rocked, and the story was well-created and interesting. A fairly quick and excellent read.
