good price; good tech support; takes grreat photos, paricularly outdoors in natural light
Even more thoughts (as of July 13, 2016): I now feel that the problems I have been experiencing the camera had to do with my ineptitude, and that the camera is an excellent product. It takes great outdoor photos. I found the user guide difficult to understand. But, if you call the Nikon tech support 800 number, they will patiently walk you through the steps you need to follow to configure the camera properly. With their help, I am finally finding I can get the camera to work. I am taking great outdoor photos. And, I seem to be doing a lot better with indoor photos. (I live in the city in an apartment with no natural lighting.) The camera is a good product at a good price. The photos I am now taking are super: sharp and stunning. I am glad I did not give up on this product. More thoughts (updated of July 9, 2016): I keep changing my mind about this camera. People have told me: just use you iPhone It takes great photos, probably better ones anyway. Well, I have been using the Coolpix camera again some lately. I find that it takes great outdoor photos in the daytime, actually better than my iPhone does. The Coolpix photos fill up the fame and just plain look better – stunning. The contrast (or whatever you call it) is just right. Where I seem to experiencing trouble taking photos with the Coolpix is indoors. It is undoubtedly a problem of lighting -- I am often getting blurry photos. But outdoors the camera takes great photos. So it seems to be a very good camera. My problem with it seem to be that: --- I am not proficient in photography; -- the instructions seem awfully complicated; the user manual is not much help ******************************************************* My latest thoughts (update of July 3, 2016): I am behind the curve insofar as concerns photography expertise. I've had some trouble using this camera. I'm not sure if the problem is my ineptitude or the camera. I continue to have trouble adjusting settings and figuring out which button or setting to use, plus finding the buttons for settings on the camera. The tech support people at Nikon (they have an 800 number) are eager to assist. But, I still seem to be having trouble figuring out what's what and following directions. I have had the camera for several months now. For me, the settings and/or adjustments that you need to make before taking photos seem awfully complicated. Perhaps all digital cameras are that way nowadays. Sometimes, I get lucky and the camera takes great pictures. I just can't seem to master it. From my earlier review (plus an update to that earlier review; see below): A few tips: -- The user manual that comes with the camera is very brief and doesn’t seem to cover everything. I downloaded the user manual online as a PDF file. It took just a minute to do so. The downloaded user manual is very thorough and clear. -- The tech support that the company provides is excellent. I accessed them by phone. Hardly no wait time. They are patient and helpful. It is easy to take videos; it makes decent ones with just one touch of a button. addendum to my first review: I am adding something to what I wrote above about a month ago. I am not sure about this camera. I am having trouble with photos often being out of focus. I can’t seem to quite correct this. Some (many) but not all of the photos are out of focus. I have called Nikon tech support. The problem seemed to be resolved at first when I followed their instructions, but the problem of out of focus shots returned and persisted. I don't know if it is because of my lack of expertise and/or ineptitude or the camera itself. I am not sure about this product. I just purchased an iPhone and it seems to take better photos. (But, the iPhone doesn’t have a zoom like this one does.) Additional follow up: it seems that the problems with this camera with respect to blurry, out of focus photos may be due, mainly, to poor lighting where I have been taking my photos; also, possibly, my unsteady hand.

This camera is solid :)
I have had this camera for all of two hours, delivered to my office. I have taken pictures around the building, inside and out, light areas and dark, and for a point and shoot, this appears to be an excellent introductory camera coming at a reasonable price. I'm not going to go into the features (or lack thereof) from the other posts but will try to address the concerns I have read. Although the camera is light in weight, it feels pretty solid to my big 'ol man hands. Others have commented on the durability but it is still just plastic, not aircraft grade aluminum, so I feel it will last as long as I don't bang it around or drop it. My old CoolPix used to take five or six seconds to ready itself when powered on but this one is ready almost immediately. It accepted my new PNY class10 64G SDcard and rechargeable NiMH batteries with no errors. I found some really low light areas and the lens sucked in enough light (sans flash) that the area looked well lit in the picture. I was able to zoom to a person more than 100 yards away in a medium lit warehouse, and although I did have to steady the camera on a solid object, it returned a very clear photo for such a long distance. People have complained of noise in their zoomed pics but you just can't steady it yourself at that distance, set it on something or buy a tri/mono pod for $15. At first I thought the auto-focus was acting up but it's been awhile since I used anything other than an iPhone for pictures so I forgot to gently depress the button to get the thing to focus (maybe I'll get around to reading the manual, who am I kidding, no I won't). After that, focus worked perfectly and unless I was moving, photos were very sharp. I tried a short video, appeared to be good quality in office light, sound was good, no complaints. All in all, this is a reasonably priced camera that takes quality pics, is easy to operate, and should serve you well if you don't toss it around. I read the posts from others that had mechanical issues so I intend to fully test it before my trip in a couple weeks but I'm not going to get all bunched up over the camera's limitations because I bought it for what it is. If you want a ton of features and an internal gyro-stabilized mega-lens, then prepare to spend a lot more money, like my wife does.

Probably My Last Camera
OK, I'm a cranky old man and it took me days to decide on this camera. I searched and read gobs of stuff and pushed the button on this one. Now, this camera comes with an instruction manual or there is one online for free. USB cord and batteries. The manual has all this complicated mumbo-jumbo but I relied on FULL AUTO for my shooting. I set it on auto and went to work taking pics of stuff I needed to document. YOU NEED TO READ THE MANUAL regarding zoom usage and how to let it focus before completely depressing the fire button. I don't see any reason for me to mess with the other controls but I can if I wanna play around. I don't so that takes care of that. The pictures are clear, natural and I couldn't ask for an easier camera to use that takes decent pics. I use the 32 Gig card and the camera comes with a USB cable but it is way too short. Get a 5ft cable from Amazon. It takes 4-AA batteries and I'm not going to get caught-up in proprietary scams. Also, it comes with 4 Chinese Duracells that are working now but I have extras handy with no Chinese lingo. The thing looks like it's made good and will suit me just fine for what simple pics I need. The zoom is super and is clear if you let it focus. When the light turns green fire. I'm only gonna tell you 2 more times. Take about 30 minutes and read the manual and familiarize yourself with the camera controls and how to take great shots. If you have to monkey-around with the controls for each shot you aren't taking advantage of the auto stuff. It's made in China and probably won't last long but the price seems fair compared to all the others I examined. I have not made videos so I can't speak to that. Read the manual and you'll be on your way to simple picture taking. I plug the camera into my computer and the pics are sucked-off onto Windows 10 software and usually defaults to Paint. I can modify the pics if I like. I did not download the Nikon software since there are complaints about removing the stuff if you want to. Hard to uninstall. It's as cheap as I could go and get a cool looking camera that will do the job for me with a minimal learning curve. Sure, you'll need to play around a little but not much. I got right onto the zoom and basic auto settings. READ THE MANUAL!

Best camera for beginner and intermediate photographers alike
Love this camera, perfect for beginners and intermediate photographers alike. This is my second Nikon coolpix. My first digital camera was the smaller version of this one. I can't recall the serial number or name of it but it was an excellent camera and had it not been lost I would still be using it nearly 10 years later. Nikon lenses in my opinion are unparalleled. With this camera you get all the ease of use from an inexpensive point and shoot, especially when using auto mode or the smart portrait feature, and all the crisp, clean professional quality of a Nikon lense. So easy to set up. Honestly putting the strap on the camera took much more time than to set it up to take a picture. Even for beginners this will be out of the box and ready for use in just a few minutes. I enjoy nature photography and am the shutterbug at every family event so a camera that is easy and comfortable to use is a must. The strap is comfortable and the lense cover is easy to use and is very secure. The coolpix has the easy options I've mentioned but if you are a little more advanced you can easily adjust the exposure, balance and color as well. The timer function is so simple, just one button to select and one to initiate the ten second delay which is perfect for group shots or selfies. You can easily switch back and forth from still shots to video which is great at events. The zoom on this camera is awesome. Gets super clear shots from many feet away, great for sports or nature walks. Also compensates for shaky hands or subject very well, honestly it's hard to take a terrible shot with this thing. I was expecting all of this with my second Nikon purchase and I was not disappointed. What I was pleasantly surprised to discover was the comfort of using this. The design of the camera and where you hold it and select buttons is flawless. It feels so secure and comfortable in my hands. For the price you simply can't beat this.

Updated Review-From 5 stars to 1.
I LOVE this camera - easy operation, great pictures. fantastic price. - this was my review after using the camera for a few days. I didn''t use it again until about a month later on my first trip to the Grand Canyon. The camera began continually saying "battery exhausted" after I put new batteries in and taking only a few pictures. I have purchased new batteries and installed them several times and after 3-4 photos, get the same message - battery exhausted and the camera shuts down. I googled this and apparently it is an issue with the camera. Too bad - I researched this camera and found nothing about this. evidently it has something to do with the mother board and will need to be sent for repairs. I just checked and this camera had a 30 day warranty - good grief!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes I got a great price but not worth sending it for repari even at this price . I have owned NIKONS - much more expensive ones all of my life. My financial situation the past few years meant no camera - I had to sell it so I was SO EXCITED to have found this at this price at least I could own a NIKON again even if it was the bottom level. I just tried using this camera again a few days ago and the same problem. I give up. Don't buy from this company - 30 day warranty and obviously issues with this camera - no wonder it was so inexpensive. I buy on Amazon all the time and this is the only poor review I have ever given. I'm so angry and frustrated about this. Waited so long to own a camera again and now this. DON"T BUY FROM THIS COMPANY AND STAY AWAY FROM THIS NIKON MODEL.

Great camera for anybody that wants to start photography
Since the beginning of this year, I've been wanting to try photography. As usual, I spent around 2 weeks trying to decide which camera I should buy. This camera came up with a great resolution and low price. Absolutely love it, because it is so simply, and it gives you the feel of a dslr because of the size and shape. The pros in this product were: -Low Price -Great resolution (20.2 megapixels) - Compact enough to travel around with it -A magnificent zoom (28x) - The many pre-established scenarios were they adjust the ISO and the white balance. The only con I could come up was that you can't manually adjust the shutter speed of the camera, only the ISO and White balance, but I still believe it is a bang for your buck. Would recommend it to anybody who wants to start photography and doesn't want to spend $300+ on a DSLR. I added a picture I took when I went to a beach some time ago.

Honest Pro's and Con's
Pros For the price this is a decent camera for point and shoot. The video stabilization is a 5/5; as well as the stock audio quality and noise cancellation. As a result, video quality actually looks like 720p The build and physical quality is also 5/5. Cons Unfortunately, you will be shooting or recording mostly in auto mode with little to no option to change iso, or other features. Though the zoom is decent, auto-focus will cancel out that capability with profound unstablility resulting in blurred or shaky photos. So a tripod is a must for zooming. For photos macro-shots even with the setting to, "Macro" again auto-focus cancels out this feature and results in blurred shots. This camera is not to great with scene adjustments either. If the scene in not will illuminated 75% of photos appear to be 2p - 5p. A little disappointing for a year 2015 camera.

Quality, ease and excellence!
This camera has been amazing!!!!! It has opened my eyes to such enthusiasm in the beauty of the world around me. So easy to use. Not too confusing for a beginner, and offers some great zoom and macro qualities. Light weight, and sturdy. I hope you start your photo adventures with this Nikon L340.
