This is a very nice scissors in that it actually cuts paper. My 5-1/2 year old Granddaughter is left-handed, and has a much easier time using these scissors than another pair. Truthfully, I didn't even think about that being an issue when I bought them! It tends to run more on the smaller side. If the elderly person has somewhat small hands similar to a toddler then yes these scissors is what you would need to get.
