Such a good movie

Old school thriller movie with crazy twist! Interesting story and different ‘evil’ characters you would not expect. It popped up in suggestions and l didn’t realize how old the movie was til l read about it but still entertaining for being an old movie.

This is a hilarious take on horror movies. Its got all the tropes and is just having a good-time with it. One of those horror comedies that helped redefine the genre.

One should put away any religious beliefs and archaeic notions on supernatural phenomenon and get stoned and enjoy the ride....it is only a crazy horror film. I don't watch very many because well most are formula but to me at least this turned that horror formula upside down. As far as humanity ending and giving it a fresh start maybe a good idea considering where this country and the world are headed....I don't believe however that regular human sacrifices are needed.....we are doing it all by ourselves.

This is not only a brilliant horror film, but also a brilliant deconstruction of horror films. If you're a fan of the horror genre, you absolutely have to see it. It's scary, suspenseful, and sexy; but it's also funny, clever, and self-aware. It's a fresh new take on a genre that was starting to get rather stale. Written by geek icons Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, produced by Whedon, and directed by Goddard, this film takes all of the standard tropes you'd expect to find in a modern, blood-soaked horror movie, shines a spotlight on them, and gives them a fresh new interpretation that somehow manages to be both subversive and celebratory at the same time. Here, subtext becomes text, as Goddard and Whedon pull back the curtain and allow us to see what's really going on behind the scenes of the typical slasher film, letting us in on the secret of why all of these movies seem to follow the same basic plot. Some things in this movie will feel very familiar to anyone who has seen any of the popular horror films of the past few decades, especially the "Halloween", "Friday the 13th", and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" franchises and their derivatives. But everything else in this movie is so original, so unexpected, and so unlike anything we've ever seen before in a slasher film that it transcends the genre and redefines what a horror movie is capable of being. This is not merely a horror film. It's a subtle commentary on the very nature of horror films. It is a loving critique of the genre, as well as a satirical homage to it. It's not a parody like the "Scary Movie" franchise; though it does often blur the line between the grotesque and the absurd. This is an actual horror thriller that is just as suspenseful, just as violent, and just as gory as any other slasher film. But there's a lot more to it than that. As you'd expect from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard -- who first worked together on Whedon's cult classic TV series, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" -- this movie manages to find the dark humor in the midst of all the horror; and it celebrates the aesthetics of the macabre. More importantly (at least from the perspective of geeks like me) this movie has an intellectual depth to it that you just don't find in the typical slasher film. If you're not a geek, you can thoroughly enjoy this movie simply for its edge-of-your-seat thrills, its laugh-out-loud jokes, and its eye-candy cast (personally, I liked the redhead; but, then again, I always like the redhead). But geeks will also appreciate the clever subtext that Goddard and Whedon have built into this film. There's definitely a lot going on underneath the surface. If you're a fan of horror movies, you really owe it to yourself to watch this. And you'll definitely want to watch it more than once in order to make sure you catch all of the subtle details that are easy to miss the first time around. I think you'll also enjoy the bonus materials included on this disc. I certainly had a big grin on my face the entire time I was watching the mini documentary on the making of the film, and the featurettes on monster design and special effects. It's fun to see how all this stuff gets done. The audio commentary by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard is also a lot of fun to listen to. Overall, the special features complement the movie quite nicely. I was quite pleased with them. I can't guarantee that you'll love this movie as much as I do, because your tastes may be very different from mine. But if what I've written here has piqued your curiosity about this film, then you really need to check it out and decide for yourself whether or not you like it. I'm certainly glad I saw it.

One of my favorite horror movies.

It has been so long since I watched this movie, but I needed to rent it from Prime and I've decided to write a little review for anyone who has yet to see it and are curious. Per i fan del genere questo è il nerd-vana! Meta narrazione su i clichè dei film horror con risultati esilaranti. Trama apparentemente banalissima ma che viene trasformata in qualcosa di appassionante. È palese il divertimento e la passione di Joss Wedhon & co. Bello anche da rivedere per notare i dettagli.

これは日本版ではＣＡＢＩＮで出ているものの海外版です。内容は私としては面白いとおもっていますが、ダブリだとは思わず購入したため、英語の勉強？？？をかね見ています。ブルーレイでこの値段、まあしかたないです。

Dado que no ha salido de forma oficial en España, esta versión alemana en DVD es perfecta y económica. Eso sí, como bien se indica en las características, viene en V.O. y con subtítulos en inglés. Lógicamente se reproduce sin ningún problema en nuestros reproductores o consolas españolas. La película, pues una gozada. Una obra maestra que no se ha estrenado en los cines de nuestro país y que ni siquiera cuenta con distribución en DVD o Blu-ray por aquí.

Maybe it's worth laying something on the line here before I start - I don't think this movie was made for kids that like horror movies. I think it's more of a movie for horror fans old enough to remember the bombastic, non-pc, topless girls and machetes in heads scares of 70s and 80s cinema. If you're unable to grasp how gloriously silly those old-school dead-teenagers-at-a-summer-camp and what they were about, you might miss the joke in this film. A group of college-kid stereotypes go off to a cabin in the woods to have the usual weekend of alcohol, drugs and (gasp) premarital sex. Oh, but wait, they aren't stereotypes at all (except maybe the stoner). And everything they do seems to be being monitored by guys in ties and labcoats in some kind of secret government facility. And the kids are being manipulated from the get-go into becoming stereotypes (except maybe the stoner). And the killer zombies in the woods are... ok, that would be telling, but suffice to say nothing about this typical 1980's slasher-movie plot is typical, and by the end everything you ever thought you knew about what happens to poor young 'uns in horror movies is turned on its head. And you just might understand why everyone splits up and dies stupidly in these kinds of flicks. This is maybe the most Whedonlike Joss Whedon movie ever. It's knowingly clever (which is mildly irritating at times, but pop culture and in-jokes are the guy's hallmark), ironic as all hell and faultlessly crafted, and has plenty of those Whedon-tastic funny one liners. Each time you think you have a grip on it, Cabin in the Woods changes tack and hits you with something else that seems entirely nonsensical, but it all makes sense in the end. The kids are (or at least become) the recognisable monster cannon-fodder of old, and the growing cavalcade of monsters are all ones you've seen before in those kinds of films. This isn't so much a sensible horror movie, it's a glorious celebration of everything that was dumb and fun about those pre-torture-porn days of horror; a salute to friends in a darkened room or a drive in, downing beers and mocking the teens getting turned into shishkabob and waiting for the hot blonde to take her top off. If you want shocks and violence that makes you wince, you are not going to find it here. But if you're of the right kind of age to remember when Jason Voorhees was the slaughter-king of Camp Crystal Lake, or when your dreams weren't safe from Freddy Krueger, and you'd have to be some kind of idiot to read a passage from an old book, or listen to a reel-to-reel you found in a cabin in the woods, you'll understand this movie in a few seconds. It's a tribute to more innocent horror; the kind you enjoyed for being unreal and silly and titillating and still a little forbidden back in those days gone by. And if you're like me, a member of Generation Evil Dead, you'll love this beautiful, homage-tastic joke, in all its many shades of spurting red stuff. A real modern gem.
