Komputerbay SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC and MicroSD, MicroSDHC, MicroSDXC Memory Card USB Reader

The product was just what I was looking for - an inexpensive (this cost $5.00 including shipping), integrated, simple (plug into the USB port without the need for a cable) memory card reader that handles the latest technologies (SD, SDHC, SDXC in standard and micro sizes). I tested the product to read from and write to SD and SDHC cards of various capacities (2gb, 4gb, and 32gb) and it worked well. The product is constructed of rather cheap translucent plastic with caps on both ends (one end is for the USB connector and the other end is for the memory card slots). The plastic cracks / chips easily, and the caps do not fit snugly (are loose and pull off without effort). (The product arrived promptly, but both one end and cap had chipped and rough plastic edges, an indicator of not very good quality control in the plastic manufacturing process).When I ordered this product, I also ordered, at the same time, an "Integral SD / SDHC / SDXC USB Memory Card Reader Single Slot" for $6.64 (including shipping). The Integral also was inexpensive, integrated, simple, handled the latest technology card readers, worked well on the read / write tests, and arrived promptly. However, the Integral has only a regular size SD slot (it did not have a micro slot, so need to convert the micro size card to a regular size card via an adapter, which generally comes with the purchase of a micro SD card). However, the Integral was very well made of solid plastic and a cap which fits very snugly.Both cards are relatively inexpensive and work well; the tradeoff is for convenience (Komputerbay accepts micro size cards without an adapter) for higher quality plastic case (Integral).

I felt like I was sticking my neck out when I found this Komputerbay SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC and MicroSD, MicroSDHC, MicroSDXC Memory Card USB Reader on the Internet. Its price was amazingly low and I'd never heard of KomputerBay. But their website was full of lots of solid product information. For a Chinese site it was also very well written in comfortable, colloquial English that made me feel like somebody cared a lot about what they were doing and wanted to do it right.A well-packed parcel arrived with my order just about when the site promised it would. The little card reader not only cost much less than I expected, but was nicely made, and worked exactly as promised. Best of all, it enabled me do something I couldn't do with my desktop PC or any of the other (all more expensive) card readers I already had. It read and wrote higher capacity HC & even XC SD cards. That made it a simple matter to download data from my desktop PC and add it along with as much 64Gb or more of memory to my new Acer Iconia TAB500 Windows tablet/keyboard combo.In short Komputerbay delivered a quality product, excellent service, a real value and help when I needed it. The reader looks identical in shape to other readers but actually is designed differently. As a plus, it incorporates a micro SD slot as well as a standard size SD reader. As a minus it will not accept the cap when a full size SD card is in place (so you can't carry it around with a full size SD memory card installed). I bought this to read a 64Gb microSDXC card which it did without problem so I'm pleased with this part. Finally I was disapointed in how Amazon packed it. I bought a ceiling fan a day or so later and they shipped both the reader and fan in the same large box. The outer box had suffered some transit damage and had some wide holes in it - the fan was fine but I only just noticed something stuck to the packing tape in the bottom before I discarded the box - it was the card reader in a flimsy plastic bag. If it had become loose it would eaisly have come out of one of the gaps. So it works as advertised, came quickly but could have been lost or damaged due to silly packing.

I had a Zeikos card reader already that I was using for the SDHC cards in my Canon 60D. And though it felt kind of cheap in my hand, it worked really well. So, I decided to buy another one for my wife to keep in HER camera bag. But for some reason, I chose this one instead another of the Zeikos units, even though they are cheaper and Amazon carries both. I guess I wanted to see if this slightly more expensive one performed any better than the one I already had.Both units are USB2.0, but the difference in speed is astounding. The Zeikos unit is, quite literally, 10X faster than this one. Just a little while ago I decided to run a test to make sure I wasn't imagining things! I had 114 RAW images on a 32GB SDHC card...each file was roughly 23MB in size. It took one minute and 54 seconds to transfer 8 of these images from this reader to the hard drive. Then I dismounted it, restarted my machine, and remounted the card using the Zeikos unit, and copied all 114 to a separate folder in 3 minutes and 10 seconds.In windows, the speed of this card reader was reportedly 1.4 MB/sec. The Zeikos unit was 14.8 MB/sec. This was using the same SDHC card, the same USB port, and the same files, to different folders on the same hard drive. The only difference was the card reader.To it's credit, this unit DOES work. It's never had to be removed or re-inserted to get Windows to recognize it. And it 'seems' better built than the Zeikos. But it's sooooo sloooooowwwww that I cannot bear to use it anymore. I ordered three more of the Zeikos units from Amazon about 10 minutes ago.
