Q: Does it pick up sand?

yes...I am getting sand in my pool even though I do not have a sand filter????? That is one of the reasons I bought it!

Q: will it pick up thick wet leaves and pine needles that were dropped over winter? Pool was not closed properly.

It will pick up some, put not a whole lot at a time You will have to keep dumping quite often. I have a 14ft above ground pool, and it is perfect for that size, I love this vac.

Q: What powers the catfish pool cleaner?

mine only charged by internal rechargable , guess it got wet somewhere along the line. Will not recharge, but going to get another because it works lots better than intex vac
