Our Duo Square is a 2 piece design, which offers greater flexibility than our other models that have a fixed-size umbrella pole opening. The Duo Square is designed for a 1.5"-1.75" umbrella pole, but due to the 2 piece design, can handle a post up to 4" in diameter - all while still closing properly with the velcro connections between the 2 halves. Yes, you can use gravel in place of sand without any trouble. Keep in mind that while they are similar in weight, gravel is about 10% lighter than sand. Not so much that you'd need to worry though.
