Cranko classic recorded at last
ONEGIN remains John Cranko's most widely performed ballet. Companies from The American Ballet Theatre to The Australian National Ballet (and many in between) have it in their programs. Here we have an exciting performance in a stunning production by the company for which it was created. The video and audio on the Blu-ray are excellent. Package arrived early and in pristine condition. I first saw the ballet over fifty years ago by the original cast and was not disappointed in any way by the current company's performance. Highly recommended.

Onegin is not the best vehicle for a ballet.
The characters in Eugene Onegin, the novel, are quite complex for the most part (Olga notwithstanding) and a ballet simply cannot transmit those psychological complexities. Moreover, a primary scene in the novel (and the opera) is Tatyana's letter scene which she writes alone late at night. It is difficult to create a pas de deux with one person (an aria is fine). So Cranko creates a mirror scene through which Oregon appears as Tatyana dreams. But it doesn't really work. So the dancing here is first rate, Cranko is a fine ballet master, but in my opinion he could have found a better text for his choreography.

a masterpiece
First saw this ballet movie as an in-flight feature and was hugely impressed. I loved it so much that after the trip I purchased the blue-ray disc. Tchaikovsky's piano essay "the Seasons" is the center of the music. The four principals with Cranko's choreography convey so much emotion that I really feel their joy and pain in their movements. Bravo! Now I really want to see a live performance.

Great producción of a classic already
Great classic by the company for which it was created. Beautiful sets, costumes and Tchaikovski"s music. Marcia Haydee is a plus to this performance.

EXCELLENT
If you are a balletomane this disc is for you. The story is a well known Russian novel by Pushkin. The Ballet company is the Stuttgart Ballet from Germany and the performance is superb. The sound is good and the music is by Tchaikovsky. I love this disc.

long long wait.
Conversation between me and my husband at the Opera Garnier Paris 2018"is this the one where he shoots himself and his mistress?""No, darling, that's Mayerling. This is the one where he shoots his best friend,"A big thank you from all confused husbands as the Stuttgart Ballet finally, finally releases Onegin onto blu ray. I have waited for this for a least 20 years. Unfortunately, it is impossible for me to write an objective review of this ballet as I love it too much. This is my favourite ballet and I am too swept up the the music, costumes and story to be impartial. However, my husband (this is his account-he's Tristan) said the floor is too shiny and lit wrong for the cameras but that may be the transfer and the director favours some odd choices: the focus should always be on the dancing. A problem with all ballet recordingsAnyone who loves narrative ballet must buy this;, anyone who loves me must sit through it.

Little known masterpiece
I have been enjoying ballet for forty years but somehow Onegin has escaped being on my radar. What a mistake that has been! Onegin is a delight from beginning to end.Based on a story by Alexander Pushkin, John Cranko’s choreography tells the tragic love story clearly and cleverly with just a touch of comedy to relieve the drama. A lovely touch in this fabulous performance by the Stuttgart Ballet is the casting of Marcia Hayee as Tatiana’s Nurse: John Cranko built the role of Tatiana on Marcia. Interestingly Cranko did not use Tchaikovsky’s opera music for Eugene Onegin for the ballet but had Stuttgart conductor Kurt Heinz Stolze weave music, much of it unfamiliar, from Tchaikovsky’s many other works to create the score for Onegin. The result is a powerful, beautifully descriptive score perfectly suited to Cranko’s choreography. I will not single any individual out of the Stuttgart Ballet as the company all do a great job and collectively deserve the enthusiastic applause they receive from the audience. The disk is accompanied by an excellent booklet which is a valuable addition for anyone like me who is unfamiliar with Onegin or Stuttgart Ballet.Anyone who loves ballet who does not have this Blu-ray recording in their collection is missing a ballet masterpiece!

A Fantastic Production brings out the full Emotional Impact of the Ballet
At last this ballet has been brought out on disc. i have seen this live at the Opera House, London and have wished that it could have been recorded years ago. So I am pleased to have bought this excellent ballet that is danced by the company for whom it was created. The dancing and acting skills of everybody are first class so as to bring out the full emotional impact of each scene. The excellent camera work and lighting shows every facial expression so as to make the performance very moving. I cannot fault this production in any way and it is a Blu Ray that will be repeatedly played in the future.

EXCELLENT!
Actually, the one we have isn't Region 1 but this seemed to be the only place to write a review. If you like a traditional ballet with lovely music and attractive costumes then this is the ballet for you. There seem to be a lot of ballet dvds available which do not have good music or attractive costumes, there are also a lot of repeats of the same ballets performed by various Ballet companies. So it was a delightful surprise to actually get something entirely different, brilliant!
