If you went to a guitar instructor and wanted all the information that is in this book and on the accompanying dvd, you would have to pay well over a hundred dollars. You can not beat this book for the price, plus, if you approach it as a learning lesson every time you use it, go over the material and try to understand the concepts, you will actually learn something and increase your playing skills. This is not a book to learn how to play a particular song, rather, it is a teaching lesson so you can create your own music using the different forms and riffs Kenn shows you. I think this book would be especially good for a beginner. You might not get it right away, but if you study what Kenn has to say, eventually you will become a better guitar player. I have been playing for about 40 years and of course, always learning, and I picked up things I did not "get" initially. My philosophy about guitar books is this: for the price you pay, if you learned one thing from it, you got your money's worth. If you learn more than one thing, your way ahead. I think too many aspiring musicians buy music books and expect them to be some kind of magic grimier that's going to make them into the next Hendrix, well hate to disappoint you guys and gals, but it don't work like that. You have to keep playing, keep learning, keep practicing, keep trying new things, (I could go on for ever with the "keeps"), and one day, you will be playing and someone will say, "hey, that's pretty damn tasty" when you least expect it. I liked this book, has TABs which are important for dummies like me who can't read music, and the instruction from Kenn on the DVD is great because you can play it over and over again. Worth the bucks!

Excellent piece of work. HOWEVER!If you're a stone cold beginner I'd advise against this book [for now]. The author does a great job of explaining origins. The material is well spelled out in both REAL music as well as tab, and the DVD demos are painstakingly accurate.That said, a word for you intermediate players. You'll pick up a tip or three and learn some classic leads note-for-note, if you're into that. Over the years I've learned not to assume a player is "good" because he/she can duplicate something to a Tee (or tea if you're watching your intake). So, if you're into it, and like the artists mentioned on the covers, you will learn some of their leads note for note. In doing so you may pick up a few things you didn't know before.Either way I repeat, not for beginners. Can be somewhat dangerous to take time to learn some classic leads when you should be learning how to read music and music theory. So, bone up on that stuff first, because in the end, reading music and applying music theory is what will broaden your horizons.Just Sayin'

I had the "Guitar for Dummies" from the author, which I absolutely enjoyed and has been af great help to me (self-thaught player). However I find this blues book a bit unbalanced. On the one hand it dwells on absolute basics that in my opinion could be easily spared, on the other hand all most common blues chords are covered in a few pages. Then it moves to blues structure swiftly. So I do not find it evenely-paced. The section on how to chose a guitar is a bit useless in my views, as it sums up to common sense and, again, basics ("there are single coild picks and humbucker picks" sort of ...). I would have appreciated a camparison (in sound for example) of the various guitar types and possibilities.Having said this, it is a great book, definitely not for beginners. These should first absorb and practice on the "Guitar for Dummies" introductory book. Recommended, but only if one had been playing already for a few years regularly

Ich wunderte mich ein wenig darüber, dass es keine deutschen Rezensionen von diesem Buch gibt.Jetzt weiß ich warum, da es offenbar zu umständlich wäre sich gefakte Rezensionen aus anderen Ländern zu organisieren.Aber mal in aller Ruhe. Das erste was mir auffiel als das Buch ankam: Ist aber ganz schön dünn. Hatte da irgendwie mehr erwartet aber ok, es ist halt auf recyceltem Papier gedruckt. Zugunsten der Umwelt kann ich auch gerne ein wenig auf Wertigkeit verzichten.Dann erstmal die DVD eingelegt. Sie beginnt damit dass Kenny Chipkin irgendwo über eine Brücke läuft und relativ belangloses, auswendig gelerntes Zeug über Blues und Rock erzählt, dass ich mir auch in 2 Minuten auf Wikipedia hätte durchlesen können. Das was er sagt entspricht auch mehr oder weniger 1:1 den Texten die im Buch stehen. Das ganze wird durch ein krisseliges Bild und eine wackelnde Handkamera nicht gerade aufgewertet. Wirkt alles ein wenig wie "schnell mal ebend aufgenommen". Aber ok, solange der Inhalt stimmt kann man darüber hinwegsehen dachte ich mir. Also Gitarre genommen und erstmal ein wenig ohne die DVD in die Übungen und Stücke reingeschaut. Das erste was dabei auffällt ist die absolute Zusammenhangslosigkeit der Übungen. Es beginnt mit dem simplen Boogie Pattern, das eigentlich jeder Gitarrist der schonmal 2 Minuten eine Gitarre in der Hand hatte spielen können sollte. Nächste Seite ein Stück im Stil von Led Zepplin. Mal ebend eine Steigerung der Schwierigkeit um 500%. Nicht falsch verstehen: Für geübte Gitarristen ist das immernoch einfache Blattspielware aber von einem sinnvollen Aufbau kann nun wirklich keine Rede sein. Allgemein ist das Buch eher eine Sammlung von bekannten Stücken und kein Lehrwerk um Gitarre spielen zu lernen. Ist für mich jetzt kein Problem aber sollte einem durchaus klar sein bevor man das Buch kauft. Spätestens auf Seite 12 können Anfänger dann definitiv aushören. Dort befindet sich nämlich das Stück "Sweet Home Alabama" unter der recht sinnlosen Überschrift Major Triads. Wow, ein Stück mit Dur Dreiklängen. Da ist Sweet home bestimmt das einzige Stück der Welt auf das das zutrifft.... Allgemein fühlen sich die ersten Kapitel des Buches an als ob man einfach Stücke genommen hätte und ihnen irgendwelche Pseudo-Themen gegeben hätte. Was man jetzt genau aus diesen Stücken mitnehmen soll kommt nicht wirklich rüber.Ich erspare mir jetzt mal weitere Infos zum Inhalt zu bringen und komme zu meinem eigentlichen Kritikpunkt der das Buch oder zumindest die DVD und Audiotracks komplett unbrauchbar macht.Mindestens die Hälfte aller Stücke sind völlig OUT OF TUNE!!!Irgendwo zwischen E und E flat Tuning. Was soll dieser Quatsch. Ich dachte zunächst an meiner Anlage wäre irgendwas nicht in Ordnung und habe nach Fehlerquellen gesucht. Ich konnte mir beim besten Willen nicht vorstellen dass das wirklich so ist.Allerdings fiel mir dann bei Example 7 auf, dass dieses plötzlich in tune war, also musste es wohl tatsächlich so sein.Jedenfalls wird ein mitspielen zu der DVD damit unmöglich wenn man nicht gerade vorhat seine Gitarre andauernd umzustimmen.Wie soetwas passieren kann ist mir schleierhaft. Falls der Fehler doch irgendwo bei mir lag, bitte ich um Entschuldigung für diese Rezension. Wer es nicht glaubt kann sich gerne die Videos der DVD auf Youtube angucken. Dort gibt es einige davon zu sehen.Das Buch als solches will ich nicht weiter bewerten, da ich weder alle Stücke gespielt habe, noch Lust habe das zu tun.Ich werde es zurückschicken, denn das ist für mich eindeutig mangelhafte Ware.
