Solid color carefully dyed to match the front of the comforter. It is a nice soft plush microfiber fabric on the reverse/sleeping side.

Q: I have always purchased Croscill. Is this comforter a heavy weight comforter, like Croscill?

Yes. It is heavy. Just like you, I stuck with Croscill because of the quality. You will not be disappointed with this purchase

Q: What is the cloth that is underneath the comforter? The piece with the vertical pattern?

That is an embroidered sheet set. It is not currently available by Five Queens Court but we do recommend searching "Damask or medallion embroidered sheets" if you are trying to achieve that look.
