Hands-On Motion Graphics with Adobe After Effects CC: Develop your skills as a visual effects and motion graphics artist

Mr. Dodds's book is an excellent building block for beginners and intermediate users of After Effects. My class and I at Yuma Catholic high school are exploring the world of motion together for the first time and Mr. Dodds's book has allowed us to really achieve our goals for creating new content for the school's website, social media outlets and our new video boards. The books approach to starting out with the basics and continuing to build your skillset throughout the following chapters creates a confidence in the students creativity and desire to learn.

For years, I tried to learn After Effects from watching YouTube tutorials but I have to keep going back to the video again and again because I couldn't remember how to do certain effects. Then, I read this book which is very easy to read and illustrative, and the best thing is it doesn't only tell you how to do it, it's teaches you the functions of certain effects in After Effects.When I watched most YouTube tutorials, I can only learn one effect, but when I read David's book, I can do more effects by understanding the functions. I would totally recommend this book especially to beginners who wants to learn After Effects.

Its not really a step-by-step guide to using the program. Nowhere near to Adobe in the Classroom book series. I wouldn't have purchased it if it was not the recommended text in the online class I signed up for.

I found this very hard to follow along with the 2020 version of AE. Links to project files were amazingly long and complex, then required a password, which took 48 hours to receive. By that time I was done. I bought a 2020 Adobe training book and like it a lot. I may go back to this to try to recoup some of my investment, but the bulk of my initial learning came elsewhere. I could sell it but that wouldn't feel right.

This is hands-down, without a doubt, the best method of learning After Effects as its a great introductory book for someone just learning or also for someone who is advanced but also to further improve, every step and any possible question that might raise in your head is clearly addressed step by step under each section. The alphabetical index covers all the features and the applications, its very user friendly and a great tool to learn to use the software. Great resource of tips and shortcuts! David Dodds did a great job !

Great introductory book to After Effects for beginners. If offers step-by-step instruction in each chapter and covers all the basics of motion graphics, character animation, and visual effects. The lessons and materials provided in the book are informative and fun. It is also a good reference for me because there’s a list in the end that summarizes all the techniques and tricks taught in each lesson. And it has an alphabetical index that lists all the features covered in this book as well, so it’s also a good reference guide for experienced users.

This is a great introduction to After Effects. I read it as a refresher and picked up new shortcuts that I didn't know before! David also gives helpful tips for remembering these shortcuts. It is very easy to follow along in the application while reading his instructions. I like how David encourages the reader to experiment with the various tools, and also references Photoshop to help those who are familiar with other Adobe products. Very happy to have this guide to refer to for future projects!
