You DO need the primer with the reactive paints.
I didn't think I needed the expensive primer to go along with the reactive paints in this line, but got in anyway just in case. I'm glad I did. The bronze and the copper paints are very thin and you won't get any coverage without the primer. The primer provides a slightly toothy texture for the metal paints to grab onto, and the primer paint itself is very "grippy." I've used it on mason jar lids, glass jars, an old wooden picture frame, an ugly metal lantern, two glossy cheap plastic/resin birds, and a cheap base metal box. The primer did well on all of those surfaces. The paint goes a long way, and even though you do need two coats, two thin coats is sufficient. I've used about 1/8 of the 16 ounce bottle after all of those (albeit small-ish) projects.

Fantastic stuff!
I have re-ordered this item 3 times because I go through it so fast. It is great for rusting metal. It is the primer that protects the metal before you rust on metal. It is essential and a great product. If you’re going to be resting any type of metal, you’re going to need this product.

Excellent results. Bought iron wine rack at flee market ...
Excellent results. Bought iron wine rack at flee market and needed TLC. Could not be happier with results. Started with blocking primer followed by MM's bronze reactive metallic and finished with green aging solution. The patina is extremely natural and the overall results exceeded my expectation. This a great set of products that actually deliver the promised results.

Works great in combination with Modern Masters metal-infused paints and patina finishes
Modern Masters Acid Blocking Primer is especially formulated to prevent their other products such as their Patina Aging Solutions and Activators from reaching metal, wood, or other reactive surfaces underneath. Since some of their products are specifically designed to cause the formation of rust or other oxidation, this helps prevent that same formation from forming UNDER the paint film -- which would ultimately result in the paint loosening and flaking off. This primer will also block out alkali salts, tannins, acid salts, and other unwanted contaminates from your under-surface from bleeding through to the Metal Paint film and causing unwanted color changes in the oxidized finish. While the manufacturers of Modern Masters finishing products stresses that you should only use one of THEIR acid-blocking primers, I've frequently used one of the spray-on Rustoleum primers instead -- with good results. I just take into account the surface that I'm finishing and whether it's likely to present a future problem that requires the acid blocking. This acrylic primer is water-based and can be applied using a brush, roller or spray equipment and is suitable for both interior and exterior surfaces. I scuff up or sand any particularly glossy finishes. If you're considering applying the metal and patina finishes to a plastic or PVC surface, I'd recommend first priming the object with a Plastic Primer and then following through the rest of the steps for the Modern Masters products. This primer is also available in white; but I prefer this reddish-brown as a primer under the dark bronze, copper, or iron Modern Masters paints.

too expensive
these products are fun and produce nice results but you need to use so much it becomes very expensive for even a small project.
