Q: What size is the square opening?

Same as that for a child's lap harp/psalter. I prefer this one for tuning kid instruments, as they whack out of tune so easily.

It is a square, I use it to tune my harpsichord.

Q: My pegs are square 5mm at the top and taper larger to about 1/4". Will this fit them or will it be too small?

This tuning key is designed to fit a standard 4mm zither pin. It may not work with anything larger than that.

Q: Will this work on a zippy zither?

this key was the worst piece of junk, i kind of worked once before it split apart
