Q: I plan on syncing my Fitbit with my phone and not on my computer is that possible or do I have to get the dongle and sync it with my computer as well?

Even if your computer is natively Bluetooth capable, like most laptops are nowadays, FitBit One and its application will not sync with your computer without the proprietary dongle (a shame). It is possible however to sync your FitBit with most Bluetooth phones, barring some incompatibility. I have a Nokia Lumia Icon which syncs okay with my FitBit One (sometimes the two don't find each other, but most of the time it works).

Q: won't a built in laptop bluetooth or any other plug in bluetooth adapter do the same thing as the $19 fitbit usb dongle?

No. The fitbit dongle has built-in software to poll/sync with the fitbit unit and transmit to the internet. If this is your first fitbit, it comes with a dongle. The only reason to buy another dongle is to replace one that is not working (or, as in my case, I just wanted a separate dongle in my travel kit).

Q: Someone gave me one of these with a charger but no dongle if i buy a new dongle will i be able to use it and make a new account?

I was also given a fitbit and bought a dongle and a charger. I open a new account and have used it everyday and it is amazing. It tells me how long I sleep, walk, exercise, climb stairs etc. and I love it. In the morning I start my computer, open my fitbit account and hold it close to the computer and it syncs with the dongle and reads all the data.
