Q: Why does the tape start at 1.75"?

The tape measure starts at 1 3/4" to account for the curved portion of the tape housing that is included when taking measurement.

Q: What's the little round opening used for? The opening on the opposite side of the tape pullout.

The peg at end of tape fits into the hole on tape container and then you press the button on the container and it tightens the tape automatically, giving you a much more accurate reading than holding by hand. It locks it in place so that when you remove the peg, your measurement is still showing. I first saw them at a Weight Loss Clinic and they used them to get more consistency between folks doing the measuring.

Q: Is the vinyl material cloth like? Can you use it to measure length of baby and garments?

It's more vinyl-ish than cloth like. And it's meant to measure circumference. You can use it to measure straight distances, but you'll have to start measuring at the 2-inch mark and subtract 2 from the length you find. I have used it to measure my baby's length for clothes measurements in a pinch (my mom keeps sewing him outfits though she lives long-distance), but I usually use a regular cloth measuring tape if I can find mine.This particular measuring tape is not a sewing measuring tape. If that's what you're primarily looking for, I would recommend getting something else. This measuring tape does work well for tracking fitness goals-- watch those inches changing. It also works very well for measuring yourself for fitted garments.

Q: would this measure in centimeters?

Both inches ,and centimeters are on the tape measure. Inches on one half centimeters on the other, very handy Indeed.update....I'm in New Jersey, can't get more in USA then that, and mine definitely has both inches, and centimeters
