Great riffs and drum work. Ok vocals.
Pretty good. I feel that the vocals are the weak point here. I'm a huge darkthrone fan, and compared to the trilogy, these vocals seem very constant and they never really change pitch. If you are used to 1 constant register type of vocals you might find this to be very enjoyable. The instruments are on point and shred like hell. And even on the more down paced tracks like witches sabbath its very enjoyable. The symphonic or "orchestral" themes really enhance the album as a whole. If the vocals had more range it would be a 5/5 for me.

Cheap digisleeve edition!
I'm talking about the product not the music.Stay away from this edition because it's not worth the money. It is super easy to damage it. In fact mine came a bit scratched and damaged so I had to fix it with a black marker. If you can get a jewel case edition or regular digipak, but stay away from this thin cheap digisleeve version. The only positive thing is that the booklet is something like a mini poster (4 pages big) which is very similar to what they did already in that box set remaster in 2007.

Trigger warning: contains unfashionable things like mystery and imagination
For all its atmospheric flourishes, people tend to forget that 2nd wave black metal used to be about riffs, and it had a wide, colorful heritage of old metal and punk to choose from in that regard. Emperor have sort of been historically revised as the first melodramatic "symphonic" black metal band, which overstates the role of synth in their early work; even In the Nightside Eclipse, where they really started embracing keyboards, had a constant transformation of mood and a bestial turbulence to its songcraft that tends to scare away people looking for pop dressed up as something more underground (see many reviews here). Yet their guitar-based debut demo, Wrath of the Tyrant, has a depth and clarity that the future inclusion of keyboards would only throw off balance. As much as Darkthrone's first two black metal releases and Mayhem's earliest stuff, here Emperor are playing PHYSICAL music, very much based on breakdowns and slow churning parts. It may feel overly spartan to those who don't have an ear for metal or music in general, but for those who do, it should be clear this is the best and most profoundly cryptic Emperor release. Very often a song will take a turn for the adventurous, and only after you hear the intro riff repeated you'll realize the core of the song was just one sprawling bridge; somehow, this knowledge will color and recontextualize the riffs next time you hear them. Modern music with revelations, go figure. Adding to the inexplicable esoteric vibe of this recording, the frog-like texture of the vocals (almost like throat singing) waft around like fumes from a cauldron, never giving you the feeling that a teenager is simply screaming at you.More than anything, Wrath of the Tyrant simply has this youthful energy & naivete, and an absolute absence of any motivation other than passion for the art they cared about--something you very rarely feel anywhere other than in a metal band's very first demo. Here, before growing up and releasing more "book-smart" & clever but more unfeeling music, Emperor happened upon an ancient language of conquest and horror.

INCREDIBLE EARLY EMPEROR !!!
IMHO, this is Emperor at their finest; it contains the 1993 ¨Emperor¨Ep (4 track-20') and the ¨Wrath Of The Tyrant¨ demo (9 tracks-30'), both painstakingly remastered and packaged beautifully with gorgeous artwork on the cover, back, inner tray and disc itself. These are Emperor's very first recordings, ultra-chaotic and dischordant, and still influenced by early death metal. The Ep sounds terrific; the double-drum attack is loudly mixed-in and somewhat buries the guitars but the overall result is pure bliss. You will have to crank it up a lot though. Sounds SO much better than ITNEclipse. The demo is super-primal, makes Bathory sound like a lullaby ! Every instrument is clearly audible though, even the bass guitar, which follows the guitar lines EXACTLY. Isahn's vocals are one of the best I've heard on this type of music EVER. It sounds great with the aid of a subwoofer to beef up the bottom end (drums and bass)I won't say the typical ¨a must have for Emperor's fans¨, because they'll prolly hate it. I don't like anything Emperor put after these except for the live DVD. Chances are most people will hate what I love and viceversa so buy at your own risk. 50' minutes of primal sonic demoey ear-grinding.

Necro is good, despite what newcomers to the genre say
This is among Emperors best work, despite the lo-fi production. Black Metal is meant to have lo-fi production. This cd shows Emperor's roots clearly, with clear Hellhammer and Darkthrone influence, while maintaining a blackened ambience all its own. If you are looking for clean, easy to listen to black metal, get out of the scene, because true unholy black metal is meant to be bestial and raw. btw, this album features some of Emperor's absolute greatest moments, like on I Am the Black Wizards (with Mortiis on bass!), or on old school gems like Witches Sabbath, and Moon Over Kara-Shehr. As a whole, the album presents a stunning attack of necro glory, only surpassed by their masterpiece, In The Nightside Eclipse.

cheap version.
This is NOT a review of the album but the product itself. This CD comes in a slim cardboard sleeve. One of those flimsy paper cardboard sleeves that promo cd's come in. This is a great album but to give it such a poor packaging is insulting to the fans. i was almost going to buy this here on Amazon but saw this at a record store and decided not to. I'll wait for a better reissue. This is not worth the money.

Black Metal

Compilación del EP "Emperor" y del demo "Wrath of the tyrant"
