I loved it...
This was a great story. Four female friends alike in a lot of ways but so different . This story takes their lives over a summer. For each one her life is turned upside down by events and their own actions. They were always there for each other and I think that is what women do.Gerri is the main character. She finds out her husband had an affair 5 years ago and she implodes. I can understand her pain and anguish but I also noted that she never accepted any responsibility for any actions. She works in social services, devoted to her job and consumed with the people she is helping. She also is a devoted mother of 3 teens, giving her all to them. and her house and self. She has not much left over for her husband. Sort of takes him for granted and then can't understand how he could have an affair. BUT, when he tries to have sex with her she always pushes him away with one excuse or another and when she does give in it is a ...please hurry up and finish .. type of event. She doesn't seem to see any of this as a problem. She is a victim.Andy is next. She spends most of her time going after younger men that are very good looking, boys really. She even goes so far as to marry one and then she is faced with him not wanting to be a husband and a father to a teen boy. DUH. What did she expect? But of all the gals, I liked Andy best. She redeems herself early in the story by seeing what a prize was right before her eyes but wrapped in a cover that was a little different than her usual type. you will love Bob. How could you not?Sonja is mixed up from childhood. She is into herbs, chimes, fountains, peace and harmony, etc. A real New Age guru. Only thing is, that it all works for her but she wants to impose it on her husband for his own good. One day he has enough and he leaves her loony bin. She comes unglued and the other women rally to put her back together again. Her story is very interesting.BJ is the youngest of the women, a single mother with 2 children. she has a big secret. After saving Sonja's life, she becomes one of the group. Her life has been harder than all the others put together. But again, the other 3 rally to help her.I really loved this book. I always like anything Ms. Carr does and this one was so different from what I usually read. I was surprised but it was a great read. Very entertaining and I highly recommend it. These women are so real. I think everyone can relate to at least one of the women and see mistakes that they have made. I kept thinking thru the whole book that they really need a copy of Dr. Phil's relationship book!!! Don't pass this one up.

Four women against the world. Works for me.
Four Friends is by Robyn Carr. It is a book that looks at the friendship of four women who live next door to each other. It looks at their family dynamics.Gerri Gilbert is married to Phil and has three children. She works for the CPS and works with abused women and their children. She is passionate about her job and her husband Phil is passionate about his job as a lawyer. However, they have managed to raise three children and have been totally involved in their lives. It has taken a coordinated effort from both parents. Gerri learns that several years ago Phil had an affair. When confronted, Phil readily admits to the affair but realizing he loved his wife, he ended the affair. Can Gerri find the bravery to forgive Phil or will their separation result in divorce?Sonja Johanson is into feng shui, yoga, and other health kicks. She makes sure her husband George has a healthy meal at home each night to counteract the meals she knows he eats during the day. George is a financial planner and is quite successful. One day, George decides he has had enough of this healthy life and he can no longer take it. He packs his bags and leaves. Upon his leaving, Sonja wigs out. She is in a catonic state when the girls find her and take her to the hospital. Is she crazy? Will she ever get herself back? Will George come back?Andy Jamison is a teacher and the mother of one boy. Her husband left them for another teacher at his school. Now he has a new family. Andy has married Bryce as her second husband. When he has at least one affair, Andy kicks him out of the house and divorce number two. She begins spending time with Dan who is redoing her kitchen. As romance blooms between them, her friends are concerned. He isn’t like the other guys she has gone out with. Will this romance last? How will her son Noah take this?BJ Smith is a widow who lives in the house next to Gerri with her two young children. She is not exceptionally friendly and prefers to run alone of a morning than join the others in power walking. However, she is the one who sees that something is wrong with Sonja and insists they break into her house to check on her. After this, BJ joins the group to make it four. However, she has a secret that only Gerri knows. Will her secret break up the group? Will not telling come back to haunt her?As the lives of these four women become intertwined, the reader gets drawn deep into their lives. Some will root for Gerri to save her marriage and others will say kick him out and leave him out. Has Sonja really gone crazy? Why is she acting he way she is? Will George come back? What will happen when Andy’s son finds out about Dan? Will he like him or not? What secret is Noah keeping? Will BJ’s past come back to haunt her or endear her to the other women?

Emotionally charged and complex
This book includes the intertwined stories of 4 women, their families and their relationships. There is a ton of emotion and heartache, with much caring and concern. This is "chick lit" at its finest, in my opinion! However, this is not a quick easy read for someone who gets involved in the characters' lives. The issues that each woman face are very real and believable. The way they deal with them are understandable and engrossing. This is a leisurely paced story with an uncertain, yet hopeful tone and a character oriented storyline with some steamy scenes that are not overly detailed. The characters are vibrant and endearing. You really want to see them all succeed, even if you don't see how that can happen. Get this book to delve deeply into human nature and the minds of women. Enjoy!

Well written, but.....possible spoilers.
There is no doubt this is a well written book, and that Robyn Carr is an incredible author. She generally paints a very full, well rounded picture for her readers, and this book is no exception. We're drawn so deeply into the lives of these characters, that we truly feel a bond, which is, of course what the author intends. My only problem with this story centers around, what in my opinion, is the unrealistic behavior of the "betrayed" wife toward the OW. I have to admit that I was taken aback by Gerri's behavior, and it left me with a need to reevaluate the whole book. Sorry, but it just didn't ring true..at all...for me, and the entire episode colored my opinion of this book. I would still recommend it, but not as highly as I would have, had the relationship of the two women been a little more realistically drawn.

Four Friends we can relate to
This was a great read. Robyn Carr hits it out of the park again! Would love to see a sequel to this. These are people just like you and me, our neighbours and friends and what can happen behind closed doors.

I really enjoyed this book - perhaps it's my age but I could really relate to the various stories, how complex life and relationships can be. Would be great if men read this book, as it might provide some insight into a woman's life in middle-age and the difficulties and challenges to be faced.

Review
Good information given on domestic abuse, rules and the justice system. Shows how difficult life can be for some people who can't or afraid to escape their situations. Interesting situations on 4different marriages ending in 4 different ways all in the same area.

An Enjoyable Read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I loved the characters, and found it was difficult to put the book down as I had become so engrossed in the characters and what was happening to them. Each person's storyline was so different and so complex, but it had it's amusing moments in each of their lives. I never felt bored, it gave me many a late night reading. If you enjoy Liz Bryski books you will love this book. You will not be disappointed with this book.
