Unless your 4 year old has extraordinary strength for his age, I would say he'd find it pretty hard to break. Cording is much stronger than plyed material, like yarn. The wax should give it additional strength. But then again, you might have a 4 year old Superman on your hands.

Q: Does this cord melt when held to a flame?

I have not tried, but it shouldn't. Natural fibers do not melt. Polyester and nylon which are artificial (plastic) will melt. Cotton (which this is supposed to be) will burn, never melt.

Q: What type of wax is used to coat the cord?
